When it comes to prison sentences in general, do you please that punishment or rehabilitation is most important? What would be the most effective deterrent to re offending do you think?

It really depends on the crime. I do like the 3 strikes rule that America has though.

Weirdly enough, I've just switched over to BBC1 and something like this is being debated. Mad that.

Punishment.

If they get rehabilitation while in the klink, fine. But removing the threat from society is the paramount point.

Rehabilitation should be the key but prisons aren't designed for rehabilitation. They do just the opposite and turn nominal offenders into criminals. Can't fully subscribe to the old "eye for an eye" justice and as the US has keenly proven, the death penalty is no deterrent.

It does depend on the crime indeed. I could go on and on about America's failed "war on drugs" and how many are languishing in prison for narco crimes - mostly possession with intent to distribute.

Punishment itself should be the deterrent but it ain't working, at least here.

I think make them work for free on a chain gang or something. Picking tomatoes or digging ditches, cheap labour is becoming harder to find and these crims need something to occupy them and put on their resume when they get out of the klink.
