We owe it to Shankly........

I was saying when they did the memorial before the match that all this stuff is such great psychology for them - as soon as they do the big singalong then minutes applause I knew they'd win as it fires up the team and fans, and you could tell from the united players faces that they were really annoyed about it.

Not anniversary of his death or of a European cup win or anything, the 100th anniversary of him being born...so they psyched out the other team for pretty much nothing important

I am old enough to remember Shankly and his banter was just that. There was always a twinkle in his eye. None of the maliciousness of today. I will always have respect and affection for him.

Same here mate. Hed retired by the time i first started going the match but i remember him and his quips. bad taste this whole thread apart from the stories of him. So what if they want to celebrate him. They ****ing should do just like we should rightly celebrate our heroes that made efc great as well.

Shankly had a relative in one of the 'Burns Roads in Tuebrook whom he used to visit quite often. One of my mates lived in the same road and we used to play football in the street quite often. A few times Shankly walked past, he always stopped, said hello and usually asked for a kick of the ball.

I wish the relationship between both clubs today could be as it was then - no longer possible though, and probably not wanted by many of both sets of supporters.

I trained a fella called Ted in my old gym who was our coach driver for a couple of season and then theirs for over 10. Ted himself was a brilliant arl fella who I could listen to all day but his stories of how Shankly was as a man and all the small gestures he'd do to build the club in his image where the best.

He was a man of the people for the people without a doubt. Someone I admire and I'd read about all day long. The contrast with Catterick couldn't have been more stark according to Ted.

bad taste this thread, lfc fans are fair game , but taking the piss out of a dead man isnt makes us look ****e, for the record i met the man twice outside goodison when i was a kid, he stood talking to me for an hour and a half about the game, then a few weeks later seen me outside the parkend and called me over to again chat about the match, wasnt telling you about it was asking your views on certain things, just a fella who loved football, decent man not like most others i have met from the world of footy who cant be arsed to say more than a few words.

The thread was not meant to be disrespectful to Shankly, who I too met and liked. But Shankly and Catterick and Busby and others were also great managers and people. But it's only the RS who constantly parade the mans name and talk of him without having known him. Ffs even Brenda Odgers goes on about him and has started putting his hands in the air, a la Shanks. It's the cringe worthiness that gets me, they always need some figure, to whom they can be solemn about, and parade their homage, while not really giving a crap about the man. It's just the name for them. What about Paisley ffs....

I may not be old enough to remember but Shankly was vastly overrated, 8 trophies in 14 years(one was winning the fizzy pop league.), Mancini has a better trophy ratio. Yet he's a **** manager. Bob Paisley is the person who deserves all the credit.

Shankly built the foundations for paisley's team. But yes he is slightly overrated and talked in soundbites.

What's the difference between a cow and a tragedy ?
Liverpool fans don't know how to milk a cow...

That is so true it's unbelievable.

Right.

What do you get when you mix mawkish sentimentality, choreographed flag waving with a huge dollop of self pity? The modern Kop.

I've long since regarded United as a bigger game.
