I feel this is a very well written article about us, and I particularly like this section of the article:-

A couple of seasons ago Everton broke into the top four cartel with a squad less talented that the 2007/08 bunch. While the elite have also increased their resources and new challengers like Man City and Portsmouth have progressed, the Toffees are still the most likely challenger to the ‘Big 4’

The rest on Striker option are all to be well said and it is an fair view from the guys!

What do you guys think? Any more to add to it?

We should think about our immediate competition. Right now the hyped teams like Spurs and Newcastle are not performing, and Bolton who were very unlucky not to break into the top 4 last season, have had a severe dip in form.
Then you look at this season. Right now Portsmouth, Man City and Villa are flying and the problem is, they are not going to step down any time soon with massive new investment behind them. And that is why it will be very difficult to maintain a top 6 place let alone think about breaking the top 4.

If we can asses it from the other angles, which team will realistically drop out of the top 4? Arsenal are in superb form, Man United, Chelsea, Liverpool, they are not looking like they are going down anytime soon. They all have too many resources, big squads to call on in times of need, players happy to sit on the bench when they are earning what some of those louts are earning.
It is very difficult for us to compete, but we are competing and I put the sucess firmly on the shoulders of one man;
David Moyes. He has worked wonders on limited budget.
Cahill £1.7 million
Reo-Coker £10 million

Ashley Young £9.65 million
Arteta £2 million

or West Ham -

Pienaar £2.5 million (option to buy agreed this summer)
Boa Morte £6 million

Carsley £1 million
Scott Parker £8 million

I know which midfield I'd prefer. In fact our midfield put out against Fulham, all 5 combined (including Osman, a youth product) cost less than (or in Pienaars case, WHEN we buy him for £2.5 million) Reo-Coker.
Now that is something special from Moyes.

Out of Man City, Pompey, Blackburn and Villa I think we have the most talent of the 2nd tier teams. However it looks like we might be playing in Europe for awhile so no I don't think it will be us. By the end of the year we might have close to 70 matches. I think we'll finish 6th.

I like Villa's chances to get break into the top 4 (though they should splash some money on a better striker than Carew). They have so much speed on the wings. Against the top teams they can afford to sit 9-10 back and yet still get their fair share of scoring opportunites with a lighting fast counterattack. They beat Manure already and I thought they got unlucky against Arsenal. And without the daunting sched that we have should stay fresh and injury free.

Moyes has done wonders in the transfer market finding players who's star has seemed to fade a bit (Arteta, Yak, Pinnear) and putting them in a position to succeed. Moyes doesn't get nearly enough credit for bringing out the best in players. For example, Pinnear only had 1 assist and 0 goals for Dortmond last year and that was in a league in which that avgs. more goals than any other league in Europe. And look at him now, he's still the same player.

Liverpool is the only team that could realistically drop from the top 4.

I believe Pompey could really do some damage. They've got one heck of a squad and they're one of the few teams that I don't like to line up against.

I could see them sticking around for awhile. They're quality.

(no, I'm not the Keith Shabs of Portsmouth in case you were wondering... )

I agree that Pompey can also break in but they can also do us a favour by beating the so called elite. To be brutally honest I will feel more sure about our squad once we also start beating the elite on a regular basis. We can do that with this squad but the gaffer has to let them express themselves, less defence more attack and it will happen.

Just off the top of my head, they'll lose:

Lauren - Cameroon
Traore - Mali
Diop - Senegal
Muntari - Ghana
Utaka - Nigeria
Benjani - Zimbabwe
Kanu - Nigeria (possibly)

6/7 first team players out in one swoop. If they get any injuries/suspensions they will be up [Poor language removed] creek.

Have a look at the Man City squad as well

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manchester_City_F.C.#Current_squad

The first team is good but get past that and you start picking Samaras and Sun Jihai. I think they've used the fewest players in the PL thus far and that's largely because their squad is paper thin. A few injuries and suspensions and they'll fade away. We can feasibly put out a reserve team of:

Wessels

Hibbo
Jags
Stubbs
Valente/Baines

VDM
Graveson
Da Silva
McFadden/Vidarrson

Anichebe
Vaughan

I can't see any of Pompey/Blackburn/Villa or Man City having a reserve team that strong, especially in defence/attack.

You're dead on right about that. Good thing they've bagged as many points as they have. If they can weather the storm and get all of their ANC players back healthy, then they'll have done ok.

I'm curious as who Portsmouth have to play while the players are gone.
