The country is called Ireland. Nothing more or nothing else. If you're naming the country when speaking the Irish language (Known in that language as Gaeilge) then the name of the state is Éire. The state is a republic and therefore can be described as the Republic of Ireland, but only in the same way that you would say the Republic of the United States of America.

However, the football team that represents Ireland is known by FIFA as the Republic of Ireland football team. This comes from a dispute dating back the the partition of Ireland. Basically the clubs in the new Irish Free State felt that the Belfast-based Irish Football Association wasn't doing enough to promote the sport outside its professional heartland east of the Bann. They formed a new league (the League of Ireland) and the following year formed the Football Association of Ireland (the FAI).

True, but i think its a handy distinction between North and South as Chico was trying to make. I like Eire it has to be said but then im lazy like that.
