Apparently XDP have taken on a lot of the orders following CityLink's collapse. Not an excuse in my book, just don't take them on if you can't fulfil orders with your existing clients.Probably have some obligation under commercial law they aren't fulfilling by being unable to check the status of that item. Get them to chase up the freight company for you as they should have some information allowing them to track the whereabouts of the item. There should be someone or somewhere that will tell you what your rights are under uk law as the consumer (perhaps here https://www.gov.uk/citizens-advice-consumer-service). Throw in a few buzzwords like unacceptable service and breach of consumer law and you're all set to have your enquiry fast tracked and chased up by the company.
If they are obligated by law to be able to tell you where your item actually is and they fail to do so, you can then bring it up with the Office of Fair Trading.
