just wondering if anyone knows if virgin are automaticaly changing there 20Mb customers to there 50Mb for the same price ?

the reason i ask is becouse apparently the 50 Mb isnt available in my area yet .
but yesterday i upgraded from 10 mb to 20 mb and im getting 40 mb+ readings every now and again ......

(y) lovely stuff

anyone else found that there virgin connection is larger than it should be ?

Im paying for 10MB. I have no idea what im looking at tho. I think the 50MB is a XXL BB service and they will be asking for more cash if you wish to have it.

are you clearing your cache before each test? apparently it can interfere with it and give you a faster speed rating then you actually have

speed test is a bit cack, always gives me higher results than all the other speed checkers, not that much higher though!

Its not a pissing contest.

Cmon Inertia, we showed you ours....

oooh, i'm quite happy thanks with my measly 13meg!!(y)

although apparently speedtest thinks ihave much more, even though my line is synching at 16meg and couldnt possibly be higher!

I'm not with virgin anymore, though recently changed to sky.

actually speedtest is the best one imo.

reason being that you choose the server to ping (local or international).
other speedtest are a set ip - ie you could be pinging an american server or chinese server which will give you a 'false' reading.

couple of examples from this weekend (during my switch over)

so pinging my local will show the bandwidths full potential.

just to note i always clear my cache before the speed test.
turning off my virgin software (apart from firewall) gets me an extra 4mb+ strangely.
also i used tcp optimiser which throttles my bandwidth. im getting much better averages since using it.

I always get slightly lower readings from the other speedcheckers, and when downloading or perfoming other tasks my computer generally backs up what the other speedcheckers say, and fly in the face of speedtest.

And the above says it all, why is speedtest.net telling me I have 21meg when I couldnt possibly have over 16meg?

we have some damn good connections here lads !
very impressive stuff.

most well above uk and world average.(y)

according to speedtest we (20mb) are in the top 8% of the world and top 6% of the uk connections.

yes i was wondering the same.

mine is meant to be 20 but it gives me over , but if i try another (namesco say) it will give me well under.

in fact if i try 5-6 different tests they all say completely different results .

speed test is more fun. its like war games. :D im nuking maidenhead.

:DI know what you mean, speedtest is more fun, and It makes me feel like my connections a bit faster than it is, so I still use it like.

But todays check is the first time Ive had a reading that is higher than is theoretically possible.

I just checked my router stats and I'm still definately synching at 16,380.

I'm not 100% convinced about the ping speeds either.

I use the sky router setup to check my ping lag, and they give much better readings than speedtest.

I find this to be a more reliable and realistic performance guide...

thinkbroadband :: Broadband Speed Test

incidentally I just checked dublin, which is nearer for me any way and got this...

which is a bit more realistic.
