Extortionate or what? Had to have my cat put down last night and got charged £83 for the privilege.
Just a Euthanasia injection, no cremation or disposal, just the injection. We were all a bit upset and just accepted it, but thinking about it more rationally today does a vets time (5 mins) and an injection really warrant that sort of charge?

Sorry for your loss.

You could say that about a lot of things in England. I had my eyes tested in Specsavers. On their 241 deals, my glasses would have cost £340. When I was on holiday in Greece, I took my prescription. £56 for 2 sets of glasses, and a pair of sunglasses. All are perfect.

Just shows how much the mark up is here.

Sad to hear mate.. But its the cost of the drugs used.

For that price at Speccies you must have a massive prescrition or you wanted every addon under the sun.

Rip-off Britain. I agree its an utterly ludicrous price, but this is Britain, and they know you'll pay any price for a pet's "wellbeing". Here we have a national psyche that domestic animals are almost bigger than family. After all, if you aren't prepared to pay then there must be something wrong with the way you love your pet.

OK so vets have years of training so can justify their fees somewhat. However the vet my dog goes to (he HAS to go to that vet as the missus' bestie used to be the receptionist there) doesn't lose a seconds' sleep trying to pedal some drug or other on us, each visit, because he knows the insurers will pick up the bill (as I pick up the increased insurance premium).

I lost all faith in him and his training when he started suggesting homeopathic remedies (his girl friend was into them, don't you know). As a scientist myself I saw this as utter nonsense, and unprofessional.

I do not accept that drugs required to put an animal to sleep are expensive. They have been around for many years, therefore any research costs are in the past and the chemical itself (pence worth) will be surely out of patent / licence. It the same with human medicines, you can choose to pay £6 for nurofen, or now its patent is expired, 16p for the identical ibuprofen.

I'm afraid that, like many people with a bit of training, it's a licence to print money. Makes you appreciate having the NHS.

£86 Cheaper than 5 minutes of a plumber's time though.

Very sorry about losing your cat mate.
I know how it feels.

I did have 4, but lost one a couple of years back to a liver related illness. She was only 5.
I had my cats insured at the time. Her treatment was £800. I got her cremated which was around another £80, not covered by insurance.

I have another young female cat who developed a tumour in her eye when she was 2. That cost the insurance over £800 at an eye specialist.
Then I have a ragdoll breed who has now had 3 operations on veins and arteries in his neck.

Thing is, there is no set rates for vets treatment.
The usual thing is to go to the nearest, but do 'shop' around.

Don't be angry about the fee. Just remember the love the cat brought to the house.

They can charge what they want because they know most pets are insured.
They just love giving our dog x-rays!

If we didn't have the NHS, doctors would do the same.
And they know they have an entire population who will pilliary anybody, anybody who lets an animal suffer. The only one who is invisible to this potential lynch mob is the vet who is prepared to watch an animal suffer unless you can afford his needle of death. Ironic really.

The same public seem more ambivalent to the suffering of humans. We brits are strange, strange brainwashed creatures.

Sorry for your loss matey. It's a cliche but it's true: time is a great healer when it comes to things like this.

Re: the cost of veterinary care, what gets me is that the Government slaps VAT on everything from the medications to the consultations. It's just scandalous.
