But then we at least have it categorically stated that that’s what they’re doing. We can then clearly show their justifications for one team and not the others. If with Liverpool its always something along the lines of “there was contact” or “please just confirm that there was contact”, but with everyone else it was “I don’t think there was enough contact” or “is that enough to make him go down” as the initial response, at least then we create a strong case for bias and have irrefutable evidence to show how it happens. Because those are very different questions the ref would be asking, but they’re very easy to hide behind in any single instance.

I mean I'm not totally against the idea, it would make no difference to me if it was introduced, I just think it's paying lip service to the issue and people say they want it but won't actually feel that it's worthwhile if it gets introduced. For me, the Beto incident is clearly more of a penalty than the Gakpo one on Saturday and whether or not I hear the VAR operator's reason for giving/not giving the pen isn't going to make the tiniest bit of difference to how I perceive those decisions.

It might not be worth it on its own, but id rather do something than nothing. I don’t like VAR, but at least its removed the ability for refs to hide behind “I didn’t see it”. Now they have to justify why they made appalling decisions. It hasn’t helped make refs better, but it has made it plain obvious that they are bias to the majority of fans. Having them mic-ed up wont make them better, but it gives us another stick to beat them with for being biased.

The referee should be able to see the replay if he wants to check his decision. VAR just get him to check again if it isn't obvious.

They should Get to ask the VAR muppets which angles he would like.VAR should be there just to help the referee. Not make it more difficult / cover up glaring errors.

I think the ref should only be looking at the monitor if he’s saying he saw what happened and the VAR is saying ‘I don’t think you did you know, do you want to see it again?’. You don’t really want the ref asking for different angles because that’s just re-refereeing the game. For me the best use of VAR is for genuinely clear and obvious errors - an offside that you don’t need lines for, a blatant trip/handball that the referee hasn’t seen etc. VAR just being a different opinion thrown into the mix doesn’t work for me.

There shouldn't be any discussions with VAR, they literally should just put the replay and angles up and let the Ref decide if he made the right decision.

Actually it should only be the ref who can request a VAR check.

Thought Beto was quite clever as he just steps across to get his body in front of the ball. We’ll see a pen given in a game next week for the exact same thing.

Not sure if there's a more recent thread on the issue but my word, isn't VAR horrendous? I know in the end last night it just added to the drama, but can you imagine if it had been given as one of those 'toenail' offsides?

It is properly sucking the joy and the spontaneity of celebration out of the game. It has made watching football a significantly poorer experience. Is there anyone here who's actually glad we have it? I miss the days of a goal actually being a goal that you could celebrate without reservation.

They were trying to! After they spent an age clearing the offside, they moved on to looking for a foul. It's preposterous

I honestly thought they would try to disallow it for Beto tiny push, as it looked easily onside to me, despite some making it out like it was tight. Cant remember who it was, but player to the left looked like he was keeping us well onside

Back in the old days Oliver could have just blown up for absolutely nothing and it wouldnt have stood. St least with VAR most oftentimes they let it play on to avoid making a controversial call. It’s still being used to rig games but it’s better than it used to be.
