Pilger is a superb reporter. He puts the vast majority of other so called professionals in his line of work to shame. He's a giant in an industry of careeriist and cowardly pygmies.

The aborigines have been robbed of their land and treated like dogs since the colonisation of Australia.

No doubt an Aussie will be on here soon telling us how the Aborigines are all drunks and criminals and are generally subhuman in order to justify the apartheid they practice in the land of *fair go*.
 
Bill Bryson handles it quite well in his book, Down Under. He doesn't labour the point but just quietly returns to it every now and then, voicing his dissatisfaction with the way "the Aborigine problem" isn't really being addressed and how the Aborigines themselves seem to be taking the blame for the utter devastation of their culture by the arrival of the white man.

Is it not a fact that as recently as the 60s, aborigines were having their babies taken form them and being sterilized? Treated like animals.
 
its akin, from what i can tell, to how the American Indians are/were being treated in the States. Just a lot of awful conditions and whatnot. The 'interesting' part is that both have an AWFUL reaction when alcohol is involved. There are a few aboriginal towns in Australia that have banned alcohol and its actually working quite well there(domestic violence/assaults/rapes/etc have plummeted, production during work has gone way up etc).


But really, its awful from any way you look at it..

The phenomenon of alcoholism within the aboriginal peoples of north America and Australia is quite striking, it seems. It'd be easy to make some lazy generalisation about how they just "aren't built for alcohol" or have some genetic predisposition towards alcoholism but that's got to be absolute bollocks. More likely that, with their culture all but swept away by the Europeans and their status as dispossessed second-class-citizens firmly set, there really isn't much point in trying to get on in life. And if you've no need to stay sober, getting drunk becomes a more likely outcome.

All terribly sad.
 

Sweeping generalisations seem to be everywhere in this thread, genocide, murder etc So here's one more the "Aboriginal problem" is never going to be solved because the white/European/Asian migrants don't really give a flying f###. Its easier to keep throwing government money at the "problem" that appeases OUR consciences.
As for Davek you're probably right that some Aussie will try to justify stuff that happens to Aboriginals, but its not a simple issue with a simple solution.

Nothing happens to Aboriginals, they do it to them selves. There are a fair few who make a decent go of it and then there are some who are the stereotype.
