Seems to me we don't see them anymore.

The last one we had was Steve Watson.

Is it because the game has moved on, or would they prove useful today?

Alan Harper was my favourite. I think they are less necessary due to the number of subs. When you could only name 1 sub, they had to be able to play in a number of positions. These days, with 7 subs, it's not so vital.
Yeah I never thought of that.

Oviedo played right and left back, I suppose he is possibly the nearest we have had in recent years. McCarthy can cover a few positions in the centre and on the right.

Alan Harper could fit in anywhere though, apart from up top of course.

Phil Neville played, LB, RB, DM

Phil Jakielka has played, CB, RB, DM and in goal in his career (at Sheffield Utd)

I kind of remember Steve Watson as playing everywhere on the right hand side, RB, RWB, RM, which I think Coleman has done for us in his time here

Jags played a few games centre mid when he signed and fullback too iirc. Did he do a stint in goal in one game or was that at Shef Utd? Also Barry has played bits at CH and left back. Rooney will be our utility player when he signs.....
