I'm on a roll, and I'd like to discuss these matters with folks here that tend to be smarter than the folks on Big Soccer that make me want to rip my hair out (I see you on there often TX Bill, and I'm often agreeing with you).

So, pendulum swinging definitively back to Mexico. US has no major tournament until 2014 (2013 gold cup will be "meh" since the Mexican A team won't be around), WC qualifying begins September 2012.

What's next?

1. Schedule friendlies with the purpose of rebuilding the squad, not playing glamour teams.
We need to play some tier 2 level teams (like us) in the effort to rebuild. I want teams that will test us, but will not make us play desperation football (aka Argentina, Brazil, Spain, Germany, etc)... Turkey, Switzerland, Chile, Slovenia type teams. We have 1 scheduled with Belgium in September. Good choice. We need at least, what, 5 more games between that game and September 2012? January will bring 1-2 games post Camp Cupcake.

2. Think hard about who attends 2012 Camp Cupcake and the 2012 Olympics. You are building your WC qualifying team. These players should be in contention (not polite invites). Scour the U-21 team. The post camp games need to also invite the younger players from Europe: Chandler, Diskerud, Bedoya, Lichaj, Whitbread, Adu (!) who should be in attendance if not starting. You should be putting a squad out there that has potential senior team starters/subs, and they should get decent time together.

In my opinion, you cut off Kljestan, Spector and Goodson. I've seen enough (sorry to be harsh) until they gain further accolades at their clubs. Gooch looks to be done, Holden needs to recover from his injury (which I personally think is a daunting task).

3. As you cycle through friendlies, you weed and learn. Priority order: a) overhaul the entire back line. b) we are stacked in midfield, learn how to use it. c) find your striker core. d) determine which veterans are sticking around, and which aren't.

4. Pick a new captain. I hate to say it, but it's time. Carlos is not hanging around for 2014. You need to start the transition now as we enter a new stage for this team. I don't think this is a fluffy task. This person is critical to managing the team through most likely a painful transition period.

My required attributes: consistent starter, someone with leadership and experience (preferably a major FIFA final), someone who can inspire the team, someone who is vocal on the field with players and refs. Someone who hasn't just joined the team. Most likely, a veteran. I don't think it can be the GK for this team. We are not a team of superstars, we need someone on the pitch in motion keeping order. So that leaves you with the following options:

Clint - may not be a starter, tends to be moody/sulky (has been #2 to LD in the past)
LD - may not be a starter, current #2, does a decent job captaining LA
Michael Bradley - tends to be emotional, has calmed down a bit in recent times
Jozy Altidore - way too moody and sulky. No.
Holden - I think he's going to need to focus on his return from injury and has a long way to go. If he rages back and becomes a starter, I think he would be the natural choice. However, and sadly, I think he's going to need time (think Gooch) and as we need a captain soon, don't think it can be him. He needs to focus first on being back on the team period.

In light of this list, I might go with a combo. LD on the pitch, he's captain. LD not on the pitch, goes to junior.

Thoughts?

Get rid of that goalie, whoever the hell he is.

USA should come play a game in Ireland (a tier 2 team), I think that'd be very popular.

Yeah, I sometimes subject myself to the hell that is the Big Soccer USMNT forums. See some good comments in there but most of it is crazy talk.

Your list looks very thorough and there isn't much I'd add.

The one thing I'll say at this point though is that I do think it's time for a change with Bob Bradley. He knows his football but I think he's taken us as far as he can. That and Mexico has clearly taken the lead in the region again after our last several years of being on top. We've got a tough road to climb to catch back up to them.

I've always said that once they get some forwards that can threaten us and finish, they'll become the dominant force again. Well with Chicharito, Dos Santos, and DeNigris, they've done so.

I would love a change as well, but it's just not happening. Sunil isn't firing him, there's no one banging down the door for his job, so...he stays.

I've moved past the 352 big soccer threads on the topic because what's the point? Bigger fish to fry knowing his butt isn't going anywhere. :P

Who would you have as captain TX Bill? It really was hard... If Holden was fit, he seemed good - natural charisma, the team likes him, seems vocal enough, but he's not seeing game time in awhile. So...what do we do? Leave it at Boca until we're forced to change it?

Is getting rid of Bradley going to solve the issue that the US are not a Tier 1 (loosely using your parameters from earlier) international side? Altidore shows flashes but he's not consistently a threat - reminds some of Beckford but Becks has a better nose for the goal. Mexico completely exposed big problems with the US defense - lack of pace and positioning issues to keep track of runs. That might be attributable to losing Cherundolo but not really.

I do like Holden but he's too young for the armband. I think Dempsey should be the next captain - wearing the armband might get his to keep his emotions away from the moody sulking player he can be on occassion. Besides, he's really the only one that has the fire and respect/stature to wear it. Donovan is better off being a step out of the spotlight IMO.

I think the better comparison might be Altidore and Anichebe. Both built like center forwards, both operate better on the wings.

I think there's a lot of time to make up ground here. I do worry about the back line and I wouldn't be so sure that Bocanegra won't be involved in 2014.

No way would a player like Altidore ever see the captains armband anywhere, let alone the natty team.
-Poor work rate
-Poor attitude
-Poor player tbh

In the event Boca is not Captain the armband would go to Landon whom I think will be playing for the nats late into his 30's.. Once his pace has waned he will play in the hole behind the striker(s)

If you stop calling the game soccer and call it footy you might be taken more seriously.

What?

On your first question for me that's not the problem - it's the question of becoming stale. I believe in the philosophy that we should have had someone new for the next cycle. However, that ship has sailed, so I'm moving on and focusing on bigger problems like the one you mention.

Clint you'd think would be good, but when things start to go bad he tends to disintegrate. Not a bad thing - his passion pushes him to new heights. But not good for a captain. With that said, it might help him even out as you say.

On this team a defender is perfect, but with us going young I don't see it. It should be changed to LD or Clint but with Boca hanging around probably won't. I think that's a mistake. Need a transition.

Kay stale isn't the word. Remember that Bradley is Arena's pupil. Your looking at the somewhat the same philosophy for 16 years if Bradley finishes his tenure.

1. Sunil Gulati has to go. USSF is all about making money. Not development. If it was the millions they have sitting in the bank would go towards player development at the youth levels. It's not. He's an economics professor. Time to move on.

2. Bradley time to move on. Let the Borenstein selection be the straw that breaks the camel's back. Borenstein was not playing in Mexico, and his last appearnce he went on the field for 20 minutes as a sub before being pulled off. That's right the coach used two subs on him...he is that bad.

3. I agree on the new Captain. Boca has been an excellent trooper for US Soccer but it's time to move on.
