That was only a perception, brought about when Everton signed a number of Irish Catholic players in the 50's, who in turn brought with them a fan base of fellow countrymen. There was no Catholic tradition before then, and as the club were founded from the St Domingo's church team, their heretage is firmly Methodist.
Plus John Moores was a quaker wasn’t he? I have always found the religious thing very amusing. i am a Catholic, but i have never felt Everton to be a Catholic (or any other denomination) club. The only religious link I can genuinely point to is that supporting it has often felt like purgatory!

Think if anything will be after the stadium funding gets approval from the council.

A new stadium with over half of it financed by a loan repayable at a paltry £6 million a year is exactly the sort of good investment Usmanov is looking for you would imagine.
6m a year is an arrangement fee
That’s on top of the capital and interest payments

Everton are a 'work in progress' which still needs capital investment. What other major club - home or abroad - currently find themselves in that position?
- the financial mechanism for a new stadium is still only 'tentatively' in place
- we haven't had a decent run in Europe for many years hence income stream from that source esp. Champions League is not currently available
- we are working off limited gate receipt income although, admittedly, nowadays that probably counts for very little in comparison to all the other TV rights and sponsorship deals
- our 'worldwide' audience is paltry compared to the current Big 5/6 (and this excludes the top European clubs)
Ergo - we are not the most desirable beau at the party

All of that becomes a positive though. We are cheap to buy because of these things and it therefore gives plenty of scope for rapid growth.

Including 7 m a year to the council
That's about the least of my moral quibbles in this whole affair.

It's up to Liverpool council and its businesses and people to try and make as much of the opportunity that redeveloping the dock area and that side of town. I for one hope that the 7 million payments are a drop in the ocean to the financial benefit the city obtains.
