Once again, having too much time on our hands we decided to put this well worn phrase (by Mrs WBM when refering to your correspondent) to the test and see if it is possible to brew a cup of tea in a chocolate teapot.

Yesterday Mrs Whitebootman and I manufactured a rudimentary teapot from chocolate using a jellymold as a base. We made it quite thick, didn’t bother with a spout or lid and when the chocolate had set left the ‘teapot’ in the fridge overnight. This morning we put a teabag in and poured in some boiling water. Some of the chocolate melted but our chocolate teapot held together long enough for the tea to brew. Tasted quite sweet, but ok.

Now the science bit. When chocolate melts it doesn't become totally liquid immediately, it remains quite viscous. Unless you apply some force to the melted chocolate, it will just settle. Chocolate is mostly made of fat, which is a good thermal insulator. This means that the molten chocolate near the hot water protects the less molten chocolate below and around it, insulating it from the heat of the water.

It is therefore possible to make a chocolate teapot, although it is only likely to last for one pot of tea.

That is just brilliant! I love all the pre-planning that must have gone into this. You and the missus are hero's. Please keep us posted on anymore experiments you embark on. Chocolate fireguard maybe?

Where would we be without GOT? Think you and the missus should get your own programme on National Geographic or Discovery. Very valid info from GOT's very own mythbusters.

Ta DT, all programs will be filmed on location at some of the best beaches in the world, those watching deserve no less.:P

Other idea's claiming to be useless that you could try and disprove - ashtray on a motorbike, wheel on a walking stick and my favourite - that I've personally never heard of before - tits on a chicken!!??!

I'm still trying to figure out what part of a chicken are it's nuggets.

You've been wathcing too much 'mythbusters' mate.

But still, good on ya for giving it ago.

Once i started reading your preparation and method, i was hooked.

"Useless as a chocolate teapot", a phrase which I've never heard before but now know to factually refer to something which works at the first attempt, but just leaves a mess after every other.

Howard Kendall's managerial career with us was as useless as a chocolate teapot.
