A while ago, a lad posted something about moving to another country and got a lot of great advice. What struck me is that there seems to be a lot of lucky people out there who have made good without the benefit of Uni.

Where do you stand? Uni good / bad / pointless? Does it open the eyes to important stuff, or just delay real life?

(And when I say real life, I mean buying a season ticket.) (y)

Best thing I have ever done was go to University- it turned me into a more confident, independent person that has led to me getting a decent job in an industry that excites me.

I do still have debt from University but its manageable and comes out like tax on my salary. I graduated 8 years ago and I had a statement from The student loan company and my debt is still at £8k.

Its not all sex, drugs and rock and roll but it was VERY good fun at times.

As above. Uni was the best thing i ever did. When i went i was the shyest quietest bloke you would ever meet. Two weeks at uni and i was the real me and have never looked back.
Without doubt the best 3 years of my life and met friends for life.

Yeah I got a degree, but i didn't really go for that reason. I went to find who I really am. And it worked!

My dad always said a college degree was like a suit (back when we people wore suits to work)..."It doesn't really matter what kind you have, it only matters that you have one".

Do I use the degree I have? No. Actually I have a Master's degree I don't use either. But you need to define the purpose of a university degree.

1) It shows that you have the discipline to finish something more demanding than High School, which essentially only requires you to show up most of the time.
2) It show you have the ability to learn. Hopefully it also show the ability to think critically.
3) The most important things that I got out my University years weren't the degrees. It was opening me up to new people from different places and different upbringings...it exposed me to new ideas and forced me to discuss and think about things beyond sports.
4) it was the best time of my life. You are surrounded by many other people your age and it can be whatever you want. You can party, you can be an intellectual, you can find people who share your interests. I'm still friends with most of the guys I went to college with. As a matter of fact, I'm going to see most of them in a few weeks for an annual Las Vegas trip. Another one is getting married in Chicago in September and I'm going to his bachelor party. That's priceless to me.

Long story short, do you need a University degree to be successful? No, but the statistics (at least in the US) say that the average college graduate earns $20k more per year than those with just a High School degree. That's pretty compelling.

You well got bummed.

I didn't go myself, most of my friends did. Didn't feel I could afford it at the time due to family things going on, and couldn't really think what the hell I wanted to do to be honest. Therefore got a summer job, and 5 promotions later I've been there 10 years and I'm an account manager, sweet. Sometimes it can just work out I guess.

Still wish I had gone though a bit for the experience more than anything, I haven't heard many of my friends regret it, but I did get a good few years of awesome road trips to see them! =)

The statistics would also say it did matter what degree you had - earning wise (y)

My degree for instance should, in theory, earn me 225k more over my lifetime than say, an Arts Graduate.
