Uefa plans third European club competition from 2021

Wouldn't mind some sort of splitting up of the Europa League as the combination of extensive qualifying and the extra knockout round make it a drag. I expect instead that this will be some sort of way of ensuring those at the top of the game make even more money.
 

Totally disinterested in European competition. Bloated, same clubs every year, 700 games to get to the Final, half-empty stadiums on Thursday nights...

I'd prefer a single European Cup that follows the World Cup format - groups with seeded teams based on League finish, then straight in to knockout. It would make things a lot more of a level playing field and more entertaining. It would be better than the Champions League.

But it won't happen because the big TV clubs want their borin UCL that guarantees a minimum number of games and the safety net of the Europa League.

Europa League is Mickey Mouse. A new CWC will be Daffy Duck.

Isn't that what it already is? Or am I missing something?
 
On the face of it this proposal sounds ridiculous.

They have largely destroyed the UEL as it is without introducing a 3rd competition. They only decent thing being UCL qualification for the winners, but that is largely amongst clubs who could make it by other means anyway.

I liked the Cup Winners Cup, not just from nostalgia, the old split of competitions between Title Winners / Cup Winners / League Placings was logical.

Whatever emerges will be with the approval of the elite clubs and broadcasters and not for the good of the game in general, certainly not for clubs like us.

I can see some hybrid of the Nations League eventually emerging, where the bigger clubs will be drawn amongst each other in league format in smaller groups, to avoid mismatches and the disinterest that comes from playing weaker sides. There will be some promotion/relegation format but the TV companies and big clubs will get bigger games from the off, and that will suit everyone apart from those not in it.
