Right, so what's going on over there?

We (down under) get snippets of bits and pieces about Obama going on about this and that, but for the life of me I can't figure it out.

So the United States as a country is in ..... 14 trillion $$ in debt?

First of all, why is that?

Secondly, how do you get out of it?

Thirdly, how does your perspective of things like Wars and the US foreign policies affect you, when the country is so far in debt?

And Fourthly, does it even matter? Does it affect you in any way whatsoever?

I'm genuinely interested in understanding it.

I thought the 14 trillion was our deficit. Which is apparently different.

Or something.

I have no idea, actually.

And traditionally the way for countries to get out of debt is SPEND SPEND SPEND!!!!!!

The US, like most western countries, will have to inflate their way out of debt, which basically means that they will print more money, which due to supply and demand makes the things we buy more expensive (coz there's more money to buy them), and makes each of us that little bit poorer. But it aint a tax y'see, so we generally don't notice.

McBain, I wish I could explain it. I know I am thoroughly frustrated with the whole thing. Some people have said that Bin Laden had two goals with 9-11. One was to get us to always look over our shoulder, and to run the country into financial ruin. I know we are soon going to have the 10th anniversary of the start of the conflict in Afghanistan. Knowing the size of the operation first hand, and of the one in Iraq, I can tell you they aren't cheap. Plus add to the cost of the wars the cost of Homeland Defense, and I am sure that those costs and expenditures have helped us into our predicament. You don't rob Peter to fight Paul and that is what we are doing now. I wrote a paper in college about how China would own us without ever having to fire a shot in anger. At the rate we are going, it could be true. I could keep at this for hours. No conspiracy theories, just my musings on the situation.

Thanks Brucie.

Why is that?

Keyword: Federal Reserve

Thats two words!! And what do they mean?

Thanks Brucie.

The U.S. Started accumulating debt the very instant the FED was created early in the 20th century.

It's the central banking system and every dollar they create is loaned out with interest. Every dollar, since 1913.

War ain't cheap, USA = $3.7 Trillion, UK = £20 Billion. That + Sub Prime + Housing HIPP packs in the UK. + Increses in VAT (purchase tax) Increased Taxes to pay for debt means we're all broke. Nearly forgot, dodgy banks selling dodgy portfollios and then other banks advising their investers to buy crap. Then insuring them against loss thereby collapsing other banks, pension funds, councils, people, Insurance Giants (AIG) etc.

It's all a big bunch of **Insert Word Here**

and we're all being ***Insert word Here***

Every dollar in circulation, or every dollar loaned to other countries?

And to put costs into perspective USA expected tax revenues for 2012 = $2.627 trillion. 10 years of war = all taxes for 1 year?

I dunno, I'm just googling stuff.

I'm not really anti war or anything, and I felt Afghanistan was right at the time, Just don't like TAX or "Green Taxes"

I'm sure it's easier to get people to swallow a Green Tax than a tax for guns and bombs.
