Ok, here's an interesting story for you.
My wife and I were at our church yesterday and she teaches a class of 4 year olds in Sunday School for the middle hour. Well parents as well as older brothers or sisters come to pick up their sons/daughters/siblings at the end of the hour.
I was helping her yesterday in class (imagine fifteen 4 year olds in one room  ) and one family came to pick up their child.
I look up at the door and this child's older brother (couldn't have been more than 14 years old, I'd say 12-13 years old) was wearing a Liverpool shirt.
Worse, it had Gerrard and 8 on the back (poor kid).
Heh, you know I wasn't gonna let this pass. I didn't care how old the kid was and whether we were at church or not. My wife spotted him first and looked at me and went "Ohhhhhhhh....." like she knew what was coming.
Here's a short transcript of the conversation:
ME: "Hey there, so you're a big fan of Liverpool." (Couldn't call 'em by their true name...we were at church remember)
Boy: "Well yeah, kinda."
ME: "Hmmm. Well what did you think of the result yesterday?"
Boy: "Uhhhhhhh.... (face grimacing like he was trying to remember it.)
ME: "You played your big rivals yesterday."
Boy: "Uhhhhhhh.... (face really straining now.....)
ME: "You played the team in Blue."
Boy: "Oh yeah, uh, uh, uh...."
ME: "Everton, your cross town rivals."
Boy: "Yeah, yeah, that's right."
ME: "Did you see the game? It was on early yesterday."
Boy: "Uh, no sir, I didn't see it."
ME: "Well did you see the score then? Did you hear what happened?"
Boy: "Uh no I didn't."
ME: "Well I won't bore you with the details but your favorite team had a bit of luck on their side yesterday. That and a very poor referee."
Boy: (Silence)
ME: "Well good luck with that. Your manager is a f&%king tosser." (Ah, I really didn't say that last part.)
Boy: Walks off.
I saw his father later and at least his dad knew who Everton was. I guess my point here was that in this case, the young boy was wearing the shirt maybe more as a fashion statement than as a supporter but I'll tell you, you run into a lot of "fans" over here that don't know "their" team from a local youth team.
I can't tell you how glad I am that I support a club like Everton. The supporters are true supporters. I mean come on, how many fans do you see jump on the Everton bandwagon?
Born, not manufactured could never be more true.
