Looks like/ feels more like a business op than football one.

To some extent maybe it was.

There is every chance that he wasn’t a priority and that money was earmarked for another position. However, we couldn’t find a suitable player in that position so it was decided to take the opportunity to purchase Dibling now, rather than wait and potential miss out/pay even more next year.

People look at football transfers in such a binary way but it’s much more complex.

Just because we bought one player doesn’t mean that we could have bought another. Or that we prioritised it over another position.

It’s all based on team need, risk, finances and opportunity.

It a baffling we spent so much on this lad when he’s being left on the bench.
All we’ve heard is the rebuild can’t be done in one window, so why was Barry @ £27m and Dibling @ £38m deemed more urgent than say a £60m+ striker?
Didn’t seem to be much competition for him, was he really going to be worth significantly more in Jan or next summer?

Not sure how many times I've said this so far, but once again, he hardly had a pre-season, he's a 19yr old finding his feet and fitness away from home and I fully trust those in charge to play him when the time is right.

I do understand the impatience to see him play when spending a large fee, but this is not just one for the first few weeks of the season, this is one for the next 5yrs hopefully.

That being said, I'd like to think he's now at the point where he'll start tonight in this type of game and get 60 minutes (All being well). Also being away from Home, possibly against a weakened Wolves XI with the pressure somewhat off.

I liked his debut, wasn't flash, didn't try too hard, which can be tempting to do, he didn't run around like a headless chicken trying to make an impression.
He was the same against the RS, calm, assured of his own ability.
Let's not forget he's still a baby, at 19 I could just about tie my own shoelaces. He's away from home, away from his Mum and I don't care if that sounds daft.
I like the kid.

I really do hope he turns out to be fantastic for us. It will be great watching three of Grealish, Ndayie, Alcaraz, KDH, McNeil or Dibling (whichever combination gets picked) threading passes into our striker. But if that striker is still a bit limited (even if he works hard) or if Barry is still not quite ready or hasn’t shown much ruthlessness in front of goal, then it just makes me wonder why Dibling was chased over a proven goalscorer.
As @murphy89 says, probably some combo of who was available / willing and opportunity dictated Diblings purchase rather than simply being our No 1 target that the outlay may suggest.

Who are these stronger striking options you cite? We aren't (or at least weren't) an attractive proposition for such a rare commodity as a proven goalscorer. That's why you have to take a punt and develop your own in Barry/Dibling. Give them time.

Moyes will have a plan for them.

I agree that we need to be punting on lesser known, lower risk players too but the reality is we aren't attractive enough to be going for the next category up of "£60m strikers".

Dibling isn't much of a punt for me. He will be a good premier league player at the worst.
Barry is one of very few young strikers that was playing and scoring goals in a major league last season.

This is the thing. What young striker valued at £60m was going to come to Everton? Even if he'd wanted to could we have had afforded his wages.

It is much easier for strikers to play when you have a fully functioning foundation. Striker is too much of a crapshoot to invest heavily in first. We really really need fullback play and multiple creative options. If we can learn to consistently play on the ground and keep possession, there is no reason an Ndiaye can't fill that position. If we start getting actual service in apart from Grealish, our strikers will likely improve. It isn't easy to score when you keep getting half chances and half baked service. We need to improve creatively.
