Two minute silence - Act of Remembrance

Just my opinion mate, was talking about the wider point of silences, clapping and multi minute silences, black armbands being worn etc as i clarified in a post further down, certain things are deserving of a show of respect by people and the fashion these days of doing it for everything and his dog in my opinion takes away from those things worthy of them.

Won't get into the politics of the matter and the fact that every rag tomorrow will lead with a picture of the prime minister etc laying there wreath - which is hypocrisy of the highest order or the fact that whilst we rmember those fallen (and those who returned) it doesn't make a blind bit of difference to those who send in the next group of serviceman (and women) who get sent into god knows where for no reason.

Fair enough fella - my response was just my opinion too.

As someone who has currently served in the Army for 34 years, has lost good friends and close colleagues in that time and will sit for a good few hours later on tonight polishing my own medals and preparing my uniform for Sunday, I'm probably just too easily offended when the Poppy or Remembrance is politicised or given any form of negative spin for whatever reason by anyone.

None of it is about politics, the right and wrong of War etc etc........ it is purely about those that made the ultimate sacrifice for us all.

Maybe today and maybe this thread is not the best place to make an issue of how it may have spread too much in use for other things or been hijacked or politicised by others - again just my opinion.

I most definitely will remember them!

A minute's enough...and on this day alone. That's the way it's always been in my experience.

Think your timing is the only 'issue' here mate. Your opinion is as valued and respected and listened to as any other.

It's part of the reason why those who lost their lives did so in such circumstance, to give us all the opportunity to freely express that opinon. Lest we forget...

Unfortunately, the motives for war have become increasingly politicised. Whilst those in the forces wish for remembrance day to be about all the fallen, it's not so easy for the public to reconcile it that way.

If this is the wrong thread or time to discuss this, happy for the mods to delete.

I think that's the case too mate. However, this really is the day to remember people who were taken in war and all that falls by the wayside. A minute silence is a small observance and should not be grudgingly given.

And I'll always observe that silence. The internal conflict for me is who I think about during that silence.

There was an article on look northwest yesterday about the Lancashire Fusiliers, how six brothers went to Flanders and four didn't come home, and their dad died of a broken heart! People like that deserve to be respected as long as we exist as a nation! I agree that there is a trend for applying such gestures for all and sundry, but this one is the real deal!
