Truly world class.........?

It was a surreal game, as I remember we were in competition with Bolton a bit and up in the top 6 of the table, so it was a winnable game. So you had the frustration of not picking up 3 points, but that had to be balanced against absolutely hammering them, hitting the bar, post etc etc. Allardyce sort of Allardyced us for a 0-0 really.

Rooney had only just turned 17 then as well. He was phenomenal. Just light years ahead of everyone on the pitch.

How long have you watched Everton for? It's some statement that. I do think in years to come, Rooney will be a bit of a cult thing for Everton fans who saw him. Those who are older than me will remember the 80's team. Those who are younger will have not seen him. However he was the most electric player I've seen for Everton in his first spell. The entire world wanted to sign him.

I remember Ivan Campo afterwards saying he was one of the best players he has ever played against… said he could play for any club in the world

Tony Kay. I was very young when I saw him play for us, but my dad always said that he was the best player he'd every seen. Somebody said somewhere else that if not for his ban we would never have seen Nobby Stiles little jig after the world cup final.

I started going regularly in about '93 I think, so like you I missed the glory years. Rooney was really something else at that age, I think it says it all that even after winning so many medals and breaking so many records, I think of him as never quite being the player he looked like being.

Yeah, I get that. Won the lot. United's highest scoring player, England's highest scoring player, one of the highest all-time scorers in the Premier League and yet, even at his peak, I still don't think he was rated as highly as I expected him to be when he broke through.

For example, if you were to ask impartial people, perhaps non United, Everton or Liverpool fans where Rooney ranks in their GOAT list of Premier League strikers, I'm certain he wouldn't make the top five for most. He may not even make the top 10 for many.

The player that impressed me most when I was at matches was Graveson. I was gutted when we sold him to Madrid, but he ended up at Celtic. Maybe he was world class for a few games?!

My take:

Neville Southall - a truly world class goalkeeper, nobody was close to him in the 80’s. He would have played for RS, Utd, Spurs or Arsenal they’d still be talking about him now has the greatest. It’s such a shame how’s he not mentioned. And Everton need to take a look at how they represent the great man

Gary Lineker - good god he was amazing. Once he got the run on the defender you knew it was a goal, there was no doubting it. He was outstanding.

Andrei Kanchelskis - oh man I loved Andrei the great, and still do. He was a joy to watch, absolutely brilliant. Right foot, left foot, head....he had everything. He went past opponents like they weren’t there, just glided past them with ease. He was as strong as an ox. In today’s market you’d be paying close to £100m for him

Wayne Rooney - when he burst on to the scene it was like watching those Brazilian wonder kids that everyone loves. At 16 he had the touch and vision of a senior pro, everything was just so natural and easy for him. We’d seen hyped up players like cadamateri and Jeffers in the past, but he was on a different level and everyone knew it was no false dawn. A crying shame that we didn’t get to see him in his prime at Goodison. Still think he could have developed a lot more abroad.

Limpar. When me and my old man had season tickets at that time, he was the one player that got me out of my seat when he received the ball. Remember when Joe took over and frequently left him out, the disappointment when we took our seats as the team was read out and he wasn’t in it. His pace and unpredictability was fantastic.

p.s. I forgave him for trying to relegate us in the Wimbledon game lol

I had a chat with him on Facebook , owns a bar called limp bar now .. chat was going well until I thank

He had a lot of his special qualities coached out of him . Still a top player but tevez was very similar . Players like Rooney should have teams built around them and their special talents encouraged, he was a much more rounded player and a team player and would take a step back for Ronaldo to take the lime light.

I agree that man united had such an array of talent that Rooney wings were clipped. His teenage years were his most dynamic and devastating. Had he continued at that rate we would be discussing him in the same breath Messi and Ronaldo. That said he had a very special career
