TROUBLE AHEAD?

It works both ways, if they want the same rights as other workers lets see if they are willing to take the same wage as other workers.

I look forward to Ronaldo being told that hes no longer on 250k a week and see how much he can cope with 30k a year.

This clearly only benefits the super rich footballers.

I imagine 99% of footballers around the globe are delighted they are safely in a contract as it pays the bills. Most footballers outside the Championship in England must sweat every week on the award of their next contract.

That's it. Presumably if players want to be treated like other employees, then clubs will be able to sack them.

An employee can be dismissed if:
  • they’re incapable of doing their job to the required standard
  • they’re capable, but unwilling to do their job properly
  • they’ve committed some form of misconduct
If you want to dismiss someone, there’s no specific process you must go through by law, as long as you do it fairly.

Probably do. In fact they defo do. I worked with the wife of the Swindon Town captain a few years back. Jobbing player, but spent one season in the Prem with Swindon. Jackpot.

Umm...

A footballer is signing essentially a contract with a non-compete clause. If you don't want to honor that contract, that's fine, but don't expect to get paid, or legally be able to find another job in football. Other industries have this too, it's not exactly a plight only footballers face.

The average League Two player makes what, like 800 pounds a week? That's over twice what I make and I live pretty comfortably. I'm struggling to see the financial hardship of the football world.

Know what you mean, but if you earned £800 a week for say 12-14 years, then zippo, could be a problem. Would be for me.

This is true. I guess I see that as one of the consequences you have to face for choosing a career in sports though. Your career will end before you're retirement age, so you need to plan for that.

Welcome to the world though. The days of being in the same career for your entire life are pretty rare these days. There are plenty of examples of sports people getting an education alongside their training/competing. It isn't that hard.

You know? I mean how many folks have a full time job yet still find time to train hard for amateur sports? Sure if I can find time for 8 hours training a week, a footballer can find that time to take some courses.

They all get enrolled in the PFA pension fund, which have pretty large contributions made by the clubs. I worked for the company that ran it. **** me, the amount going in each month for the top players was astounding.

But within 2 miles of me, 4 players from Bristol Citys time in Div 1 work. (Different era I know). 2 are decorators. One runs a pub, one gives driving lessons, and another one is my postie. Two of them were internationals.
