if we dont win anything this year it will be the longest period we have had between winning anything, i think we should go all out to win the carling cup like spurs did and bring moyesy some success as a manager and hopefully take us on to the next level :D

The cups are about luck really, i think any average side can win one of the cups, we certainly have the squad we jsut need a rub of the green. I think ill put 50 bucks down on us to win te FA cup after what happened last year, i think Moyes wont take any chances against so called lesser opposition.

throughout the season every team has there share of luck but up until last year the fa cup was won by the big four, the carling cup represents are best chance to take us to wembley and bring us some silverware. the importance of this can not be underestimated--we need this more than anything ,think what a boost this would bring to the club, fans round the block for tickets, booking the coach..like the good days

True, Cup-runs are alot about luck. The big difference now compared to a few seasons ago is mainly that there are fewer teams that will be difficult for us to beat. We did reach the semi-final last season in the carling cup and bumped into Chelsea there, we outplayed Fiorentina and with a little luck would have reached further in the UEFA-Cup as well... hopefully this will come this coming season.

But I agree.. the Carling-Cup is the easiest way to reach a trophy since the "top four" usually don't take it seriously and field a younger and more inexperienced team in that competition.

The UEFA is our best chance. The reality is that the teams above us in the league now have to get some reward which means, with the exception of Arsenal, they will treat the CC as a consolation

I think that qualifying for the Champions League is the most important thing for the club in the coming season. What information there is about the finances indicate a real need for a cash boost, which as far as I can tell would be provided by playing in the Champions League. We need that stability, and aside from a new investor etc that is what we need.

Uefa Cup's going to be massively difficult to pull off.

With AC Milan, Sevilla, Valencia, Hamburg and Ajax on top of the usual suspects and the teams that drop down from the Champs League, we'll have our work cut out for us.

Would like to see the FA Cup come back to Goodison, but agree that a top 4 finish would be more beneficial in the long-run than a shiny new trophy.

i agree completely, though it does pain me to admit it. i'm aching for a trophy as much as any other blue, but in the long run champions league money will springboard us much further and we'll have the potential to win more trophies later on.

that being said, i don't think we should just roll over and die for the cups, maybe give some youngsters some chances but aside from that we should still use strong squads. Remember how after we got knocked out of the uefa cup (hurts me to think about it too) our form in the league suffered dramatically? I don't want to prioritize the league, only to have cup defeats hurt our league performance anyways.

I think winning the UEFA cup is not unrealistic. One bad night in the cup run away to Fiorentina which caused us loads of heartache and pain. Look how we played in the home leg against Fiorentina. We played like champions, they hardly saw the ball. Had we even put in half the efford in the away leg then we could have possibly been UEFA cup holders this season. Wrong gameplan from Moyes on the night I think but its all part of the learning curf to becoming a better manager. We have been slowly progressing in the cups but as was previously stated, never underestimate the so-called lesser teams because these are the games of their lives and will play out of their socks to progress in these tournaments as this is MAJOR revenue for them. So, which emphasises the point that we need a bigger squad so that we always have enough experience in the team to pull us through the tough times...

i hear people in this thread saying we have no chance, but how many people could have guessed we would have got that far with the likes of bayern munich, zenit, etc. (and the dropdowns from the CL)

I admit freely that I wrote before last season started that I'd be glad if we survived the groupstage in the UEFA-Cup, but the team really surprised me with the way that they played after we had the awful first leg against the belarus team in the first round. With the way we played and the confidence of the team I really think we'd reached the final if we had managed to get passed Fiorentina.

But that game showed that it's down to luck to a certain degree, and therefore I don't count on us reaching far. I'm very happy if we manage to improve on our success last season in term of UEFA-Cup and close the gap to the "big 4", a good national cuprun would feel great as well.. but unless we manage to widen the squad with the right players on the right possitions... a good cup run can cost us in the end in the league.

Thats nonsense that mate.

We had over 55minutes to score a winning goal that night and then bottled it on penalties, champions would have scored a winning goal.

We should have scored a winning goal that night, If we still had Mcfadden then I believe we would have.
