Now training with balls under Martinez instead of just focusing on fitness for weeks and no balls allowed. I recken this could help us play better from the start, as we usually look terrible in our first few games under Moyes. The Echo printed Osman is pleased by the emphasis on ball-work under Martinez – but was quick to reiterate that there has also been a physical intensity to their pre-season preparations. “Pretty much everything we’ve done so far on the field has been with the ball,” said the England international. “All the running has been with the ball and it’s something we don’t do usually. I’ve loved it. You’d be surprised how hard it is with the ball though.
“It’s because you’re concentrating on the running and keeping the ball under good control at the same time. We worked long and hard in Austria, three sessions a day.

Just because there's a change, doesn't mean the old way was wrong. Obviously are starts under moyes were usually poor but RM at Wigan were just as poor. Arsenals have been poor in recent seasons, yet were we're very good previously. I think there's a lot more to it than Pre-season training/schedule etc....

For us I think it was the players buckling under the pressure. Once that had gone we performed. We have no winners in our side, players used to handling pressure, although I think we're improving on that a little.

Something wasn't working though, we're one of the poorest starting teams in the league, will be nice to change it up.

It wasnt a good sign to see Jags pass against Austria Vienna that led to their first goal. Its the sort of goal ive seen Liverpool concede regularly since appointing Rodgers and its because they mess about with it at the back. I'm all for building up the play but if you overdo it then it will lead to mistakes and im not sure its always the best way to play, particularly in a league like the premier league where pressure is always put on the ball.

After the rough years of hoofing it long to big dunc and almost zero pass n move on the deck it's refreshing to hear. For too long the english game has been hit n hope. Not to be a Moyes basher but I wondered about how much time they spent training movement and passing under him. At times the team looked third rate at the basics.

Professional footballers on 50K a week plus should really be comfortable with a ball as a minimum requirement.

I get that he will change the system of playing and tactics will be different, just don't think they need to blather on about using a ball, it's kind of crucial to their job!

It's going to be interesting to see how we fare, I believe under Moyes he'd run the lads in to the ground in pre-season (as you should, I guess). Throw in how high tempo we usually used to press in the first half under him and you could possibly explain why with our small squad we'd usually struggle at the start of the season.

The pre season beastings were patently to blame you didn't have to be a sports scientist to see it took till xmas to get their legs back, a point finally conceded by the great PE teacher himself explaining last seasons better start.

He announced he had given the lads a week off from the shte pre season - only took 10 yrs to figure out - fkn clown.

It shows on an international level how important being comfortable on the ball is - English players look outclassed by teams who are capable of keeping the ball. The World Cup next summer will be embrassing if we get there.

Liverpool might have conceded some stupid goals last year but they still dominated the majority of their matches, Swansea with poorer players did likewise before suffering after they won the league cup.

I'm made up Martinez wants to build a side capable of keeping the ball and playing in a number of different ways. Changing things around could give us the added extra we need to move forward and compete with the very top sides.
