He was far to good for our team.. He would be one of the worlds best midfielders today as he could pick a pass unfortunately non of our team was on the same wave length

I loved him. Gave me brother his most improved player award at Pro Soccer Schools in 1996. I remember pundits raving briefly about him and Joe Parkinson as a midfield duo (Grant I mean, not our Luke).

If we'd been able to play a midfield of Limpar-Parkinson-Grant-Kanchelskis with Ferguson up front more often we'd have had a great side in the mid-late 90s. As it was all 5 of them seemed to be injured constantly.

Got his move to Rangers on Kanchelskis's recommendation. Not bad, that.

Looking back on that team with hindsight and it does appear a pivotal moment in our history. It was a really good side, with Hinchcliffe and Barrett on the flanks and Watson and Unsworth in the middle, we had four defenders all with international honours. The legend in goal, a superb midfield as highlighted above, and big Dunc up front.

If we could have kicked on from there we could have ridden the crest of the Sky/Premier League wave.

The Johnson/Royle debacle hurt us immeasurably, imo. How Royle went for a meeting safe in his job and ended up leaving, sums how much of a terrible chairman Johnson was for us.

Big Nev and Watson were way past their best at that point, Hinchcliffe was mediocre, Barrett was terrible and Dunc never scored half the goals he should have even when fit. We also had the painfully average Ebrell and Horne in midfield.

Apart from that we were brilliant.

I'm not suggesting we were world beaters, but we were 6th in the league that season so had a decent base to build on, especially as the financial gap between 6th and 1st is nothing like it is now.

Out of all the topics posted on the forum, this is the first one I clicked on. That 95-97 side was amazing! Really sad everything went pits up

Haha bit over the top good player but to say he would be one of the world's best is mad

He wasn't anywhere near the best midfielder in the North West in the 90's, so quite why he'd transform into World Class in 2014 is beyond me

...watched him lots coming through the youth ranks and he was a very talented player. Remember him going past 3 or four defenders and then the goalie in a Lancashire League and miss the open goal. I think he had a successful time at Burnley.
