Today’s Football 25/26 Season

Only just seen the Gabriel 'no handball', what was the reason given for that? cos i'm not having this official excuse

Referee Jarred Gillett ruled that it was not a penalty, which was confirmed by the video assistant referee (VAR).

The Premier League Match Centre, on X, said: "The referee's call of no penalty was checked and confirmed by VAR – with the ball deemed to have deflected off Gabriel's shin and onto his arm."

A new Premier League rule, introduced in 2024, states that not every touch of a player's hand or arm with the ball is an offence.

The revised rule defines what movement does not constitute as a handball offence, these are:

  • Justifiable position/action
  • Player plays ball onto own arm
  • Supportive arm
  • Clear change of ball trajectory when touched by same player
  • Played by a team-mate
  • Proximity
so the ball pinged off the foot(?????) onto his arm (??????) in an unnatural postion (up in the air??)

no pen ????

There is much too subjectivity in the first line there. who defines what 'justifiable'. Thats a 100% penalty for the tricky reds if that happens.

Bias towards/against who, mate?

VAR had the chance to rule out that Palace goal yesterday and didn’t. Then you imply that they’ve ruled out an Arsenal penalty today, to even that up. Seems like a lot more work for the match fixers, that?

Also people love to cry corruption against us. Why would any shadowy organisation need to make sure that Everton - a typically very crap team - lose games we’re more than capable of losing by ourselves?

People continue to talk about Man United being another team that Sky (because they’re also involved for some reason?!) and the PL look after, but they’re absolutely abysmal and finished just outside the relegation zone last year. It’s no hyperbole to say that if nothing changes there, and the promoted sides carry on as they are, United could very well be relegated this year. How would that fit in with your supposed claims of bias?

Once more: VAR has changed the game for the absolute worse. It is implemented when it’s not needed, and rules are consistently applied erratically. That doesn’t make it biased or corrupt, it’s just awfully thought out, executed even worse and lacks a true independent regulator to do anything about it.

I concede that I’m an old man. I know that conspiracies are just what people go to now, when anything at all doesn’t go their way. I should almost certainly just pipe down and let it pass me by. But obvs I’d rather spend my Sundays arguing on the internet.
It's really, really difficult to dismiss the fact that a league/sport with SO much money in it these days doesn't have a degree of corruption in it mate, if I'm being very honest. That goes for all sports as well really..

There’s undoubtedly corruption at various levels, but it’s so overwhelmingly tedious reading about how every single result, or even goal that people don’t like is the direct result of some kind of evil group, hell bent on destroying the life of Steve, 47 from West Derby.

Most of the time Liverpool win because they’re good, and refs/VAR are so mind-blowingly inept that issues are created every week that aren’t the machinations of the Legion of Doom.

I think the people running the league have an agenda to see certain teams do better than others, I do believe refs are influenced by this, but the most telling thing is the officials are useless, I watched Chelsea v Brighton on Saturday and had no bias toward either team, Simon Hooper put in a performance which would get you sacked from an ordinary job, yet I didn't see or hear any real criticism of him

We’re trapped in a loop where VAR has inserted itself into the game for every significant action, not just clear and obvious errors, so refs are terrified to make a call and get singled out for being wrong, so they don’t make calls or get jittery and make crap ones, so VAR intervenes and somehow makes it worse more often than not.

If there was any common sense, VAR would be abandoned for all but the semi-automated offsides, but that’ll never happen.

Thing with VAR is it's only as good as the people operating it, if any decision takes more than a minute with all the angles, slo mo then it's pointless, might as well have remote refs as they are the ones in ultimate control

The “clear and obvious” remit was abandoned immediately. It’s pathetic that we have to wait 5 mins to celebrate a goal, or have it ruled out because a striker’s toe was offside. It’s so painfully unfit for purpose, it’s untrue. I know refereeing was far from perfect beforehand, but give me fallible refs every day over this utter nonsense.

get the rugby refs and video deciders in. they operate to the rules, and don't wear any bullspit from players or managers.

I just think it needs paring right back in the first instance. We’ve got goal line tech which serves a discernible, binary purpose. VAR should only be used for (semi) automated offside calls, 30 secs max. Once the appropriate amount of restraint has been demonstrated, we can consider reimplementing for “clear and obvious” errors.

Again, more chance of Everton having a reliable 15-a-season striker but we live in hope (on both counts).

with the nonsense about corners or goal kicks, I want the entire goal line from corner flag to corner flag lit up with monitoring equipment.
