Indigenous societies also pillaged, murdered, controlled, coerced and exploited others before the arrival of western imperialism and the industrial scale brutality that ensued. It's human nature. Many were no more 'free' before than afterwards. Some European settlers would have been much more preferable neighbours for some indigenous peoples than some other indigenous tribes.

I'm all for history being told as it actually was rather than the false narratives of heroic explorers and benevolent founders of the new world but the idea that European settlers were the exclusive purveyors of violence, control and brutality to other parts of the world really is nonsense.
