The thumb system is simpler but it's a lot duller overall. It hasn't solved anything either as people can harass with the new system by thumbing down a members posts all the time and sending a PM if they feel compelled to leave a comment too.

Three things about that:

1. it is entirely visible to everyone and the harassment can easily discerned for what it is.
2. each "thumb" only relates to a single post and is not carried around with the poster permanently.
3. each "thumb" only carries the same weight as other "thumbs"

All of which means it is light years ahead in fairness and transparency compared to the old, deeply flawed system.

I agree with removing the whole thing altogether.

The only reason it exists and why they want it to exists is so they (the commando elite) can stay dominant on the forum. Via a pact. Whether you're right or wrong you will always be marked with your red dots and if the admins go back to the old system you know what the forum is all about.
