Through balls

Why do we never do them ? Was same under moyes. We hate playing through the middle, our strikers are always "running the channels" or something like that.

Strikers like through balls.

I think Barkley is the one who will be providing them in the future. What impressed me when he made rare appearances last year was his football brain. One pass against Arsenal which Mirrallas was unlucky not to score from was the defenition of a FIFA pass. The ball was played to him and before he recieved it he had sent it another 20 yards straight into the path of our winger.
 
To play through balls, you need space in behind the opposing defence.

If you're complaining that we didn't do this last night, we couldn't - there was no space in behind them. Liverpool defended deep and continually picked us off on the counter attack.
 

He's got a point though. Even when there is space, we rarely try them and when we do they always seem to get cut out because the passer dithers.
 
Through balls leading to a goal aren't all that common in most teams. I'm not sure we play many less than average. It's just that Liverpool do an awful lot of them due to their pace and that they often play on the counter-attack so it makes it seem like we do much less.

Disagree, ultimatly ross should drop deeper, hes got the engine, hes proper box to box and can drive forward and he'll get more time to spray the ball about, at the minute hes not polished enough to be playing the little deft through balls, his decision making is 50-50, been saying for years we need a proper out and out number 10 who can slide the cute balls through. Pienaer has it in him but he looks absolutely goosed now days on the wing, could maybe play him in there at times untill we sign someone

Naismith scored with a throughball against Stevenage last weekend.

Our problem last night was that Liverpool split themselves into two entities. 8 players defended, 3 player remained on the halfway line ready for a long ball in behind. Their speed of transition from front to back killed us.
 

Everton played as Evertons new style dictates. Liverpool played to beat Everton. Herein lies the difference.

Just as a note, I probably would've gone with three at the back after a while, close down the midfield to not allow them the time to counter so quickly, put the pressure on them. Also, when playing 3 at the back, you tend to have 3 CH's back at all times, with support from the wing backs and deep ying midfielder. Would more than likely meant we'd of ended up with better numbers defensively to deal with their counters.

Last night BTW was effectively Liverpool 4 Mirallas 0

Too many teams play with only 10 yards between back four and midfield four when in their own half. This means very little room for through balls and they have to be absolutely perfect - we try plenty but they don't come off due to packed boxes.

What is more successful is two quick balls - one into a player on edge box and then immediate return round the corner to beat the defence line. Liverpool, City and arsenal are the examples of this.
 
To play through balls, you need space and in order to have space, you need to attack with speed without giving chance for opponent to regroup at the back.
We're not attacking with enough speed. That's the root of the issue. Nothing else
