Have they tried this yet?

I think it's more down to a 'drill baby drill' attitude...whatever the consequences of drilling that far out and deep down. It's a matter of: "Oh look, we fcuked up. Now we have to think about the wisdom of the action".

Money trumps rational thought

I'm quite surprised they haven't used this as excuse to increase petrol prices, an Arab in the east farts too close to a pipeline and we get stung for 40p extra!

But yes, incredibly sad - when do we know if this ' Top kill ' has worked?

As most of you know, I cycle everywhere. I suspect I am very much in a minority in living without a car though. Could those that replied to this thread do without petrol?

Would be difficult, being's how I live in a small town 30 miles from anything of importance.. Alternate fuel would be nice.. but there is money to be made in crude..

Nope. Time for Plan C. Watch this space.

For some history on the last incident like this in the area, see below. Thank God that BP doesn't have "sovereign immunity..." - the rumor mill (from the local area) says that BP were spending a lot more on public relations to show everyone how wonderful and green they were, rather than spending it on having the right stuff on hand for this kind of event. I've also heard word of BP busing in hundreds to clear/clean the immediate area where Obama showed for his press opportunity, who cleared out just as fast after he left.

The only possible silver lining is that all accounts are that the Gulf area recovered relatively well after this similar event some thirty years past. That's only if they can "plug the d@mn hole" sometime soon, that is. Relief wells won't be on line until August or so.

We live in interesting times.

If it meant so much could you not get in your car and drive somewhere more suitable for your eco friendly lifestyle? This is what I see an increasing amount when talking to people about this. Everyone wants to be green, but very few actually make the difficult choices required to be green. Much easier to blame others.

I'd buy an eletric car, if forced to - i bought my car without much thought - now, i'm older and wiser - i will invest in a LPG.

I could easily Cycle, I run frequently, Eat healthy foods.. The only reason a car is used is because of my proximity to popular locations.. I suppose I could do without all that if it meant Big oil and corrupt Goverments would come to a stop..
