Apparently true. Mr Cave himself has wrote about it in the red hand files. He allegedly had a long conversation with some guy in a bar in America who thought he was Cage and he went along with it as the guy was totally at rock bottom and had lost everything, so he signed an autograph as Cage and had a selfie with the guy.
