That the forum has an ignore function for a reason. Put the monumental bells on ignore, aside from a few to neg for entertainment purposes.

I met up with a top fella, @allezlesbleus today to give him a ticket after one of my mates dropped out. He was with a couple of people who had travelled over from Italy just to support the blues today. I'm fully aware that it's grim when we lose, but the reactions get on my nerves. Not only is it the first game of the season, but it was against a recently promoted side who were well and truly up for it.
I was gutted to snatch a draw from the jaws of victory but we just could not finish them off. We played better overall than I had expected given our pre season so not getting too upset yet over the dropped points. Some credit due to Leicester for hanging in there. Two Italian friends had a brilliant time so thanks to @Brennan and @boris who were as good as their word for spares. Forza Everton!

I learned that everyone who moaned about our pre-season form meaning we weren't ready were absolutely spot on.

Look at Man U - they won all 6 of their pre-season games. FFS.

What I can't get my head around is that last years pre season we were apparently the fittest we've ever been due to the fact Roberto and the coaching team introducing ball work earlier as opposed to just running initially.
Fast forward one year and our players looked ponderous and slow in the last 15 minutes as though they were running on empty. The question has got to be asked why?

Because for the first time since the last game of last season most of them pulled their finger out in a match. The preseason performances were not up to match pace or intensity and we didn't play enough of them. It's not that surprising that they weren't conditioned to go on past the 75th minute or whatever.

Good point you make there about the intensity of our pre-season games. I don't think it was the number of pre-season games this season, more so the lack of quality opposition that gives games more a competitive edge and therefore increased intensity. Swap real, juve and Valencia for Porto (quality side) Vigo and paderborn.

United won a tourno like that, comes to the first day of the pre-season and it means nothing as they lose to Swansea at home.
I stand by my earlier assertion that we will see the benefits of this approach later on when other clubs filled with WC players crumple in December/January/Feb as we did last year and we're fit and at our peak.
We also have Europa this season and my understanding of the pre-season friendlies is that they were for us to get used to the different kinds of opposition we'll face, as well as providing match fitness and giving youth and fringe players opportunity to push their claim.

This preseason they kow towed to Chang and made a special one off journey half way around the world to play...Leicester!

If Martinez had chosen the opposition we played to just pile in youngsters and give them 4 straight games against decent opposition and gave the established members of the squad intense pre-season training with a match sharpener before the season started, that'd have been more fruitful and I could see the logic in it.

From the outside the preparation looked very ad hoc and very lax. I know Martinez did his WC telly duties well, but I dont think he's prepared us very well for the start of the season.
