Oh, and contrary to the thinking of a few on GOT, Obama may now face a primary challenge in 2012 from his own party.
The guy is now officially toxic and many Dems couldn't distance themselves fast enough from his policies and agenda in a bid to keep their seats. 55 seats or more to the Republicans ends up being the largest repudiation of a sitting president's agenda since 1930. Historical folks.
Don't be surprised if you see Hillary or some other Democrat throw their hat into the ring for the 2012 race for President.

In reality what's going to change is absolutely nothing.
Let's go down the list look at what the repubs stand for:
a ) cutting the income tax on the wealthiest 1 Percent from 39% to 36%
b ) "less" spending
c) Less regulation - especially when it comes to the banks
d) unchecked executive power/civil liberties
a ) Unless Obama caves the income tax wont be cut so that's most likely out (they might get a 38 percent rate or something though).
b ) Spending less. That's a joke. You think the repubs are going to cut defense, medicare and social security? That only makes up oh 90-95 Percent of the budget. Obama's healthcare plan isn't going to be touched because while there are few good things in it (can't deny pre-existing conditions) its a windfall for the insurance, hospital and pharmaceutical industries. Trust me the Repubs could own the presidency and congress and it wont get touched.
You want to spend less, end the Afgan war which no one in Washington wants done.
c) Regulating the banks? You know who's against regulating the banks, Obama is. It was Obama's admin working behind the scenes to gut the bank regulation bill. Oh and when the big banks go under again they'll be bailed out no matter who's in charge.
d) Unchecked executive power/civil liberties. Well Obama is further to the right than Bush/Cheney as he has found out its kind fun to do whatever you want without that pesky constitution and privacy laws getting in the way. Its just the Dems who spoke out against Bush on the issue like Leahy are have been silent. At least Bush/Cheney had some critism from the Dem congress. Plus while Cheney who seems to take pride in the fact that he wants the worst for everybody, Obama is generally nice guy so he couldn't possibly be breaking the law for a bad reason.
I've always thought that Obama governed like he wanted the Repubs to get control so he could veer to the left and now adopt all the policies he campaigned for but was never for in the 1st place. Only now he will have someone to blame when it doesn't get done and he'll look like the good guy. I think if the Dems kept both houses he wouldn't get reelected but now I can't see him losing in 2012. Especially when it looks like Romney or Palin will get the nomination.

So Americans have decided that instead of giving the thoughtful, well-educated people they elected 2 years ago a chance to get them out of trouble they'd rather give the job to a bunch of crazy, ignorant people instead?

The issue, as ever, was the economy. The vast majority voting against the Democrats stated that they voted on the way unemployment had risen to 10%. Once that rate starts coming down all the nonsense about 'big government' will be washed away. A massive quantitative easing package is on the way with that in mind, and the signs are that recovery is beginning to pick up worldwide that can make that work this time around. Obama: there's little chance he'll be facing a challenge. Something confirmed last night by Howard Dean.

Theres no ways anyone could expect much to be achieved by now with regards to the economy. Different presidents would come up with different plans, some would be long term and some short term - each with their own drawbacks and benefits. I think Obama's doing what he genuinely thinks is right, whether it is or not, its really impossible to judge at this moment. If the country's in a messy situation, people want CHANGE, but really a midterm election just slaps the 4 year leadership in the face. American politics = weird.

As a Socialist , it is an anathema to me that in the richest Nation in the World , one cannot provide free health care at the point of service . Surely that would be beneficial to ALL areas of society over the long term ???
