The Sunday Sermon

( Sir ) Colin Harvey ; The White Pele .

May the Good Lord be with you all ,

Good morning , Congregation , and welcome to another new season .

Welcome , particularly to our new members , to both the Congregation and a new season , in our little corner of Sunday morning .

In choosing the subject of today’s Sermon , I decided to go for 24 Carat status , given the new year an’ all . I have thus opted for the one and only ( Sir ) Colin Harvey ; The White Pele , feted member of both the School of Science and the Holy Trinity , and a man unique amongst Evertonians and the history of Everton Football Club .
Born into a mad arse Evertonian Family , in Liverpool , on 16 November , 1944 . A gifted athlete as a child , Colin was almost lost to the Dark Side even whilst in football nappies . He was with the RS as a boy , though his boyhood dream came true , when , at 15 , Everton came calling and neither the White Pele , nor his Arl Fella needed any prodding . It was a fortuitous decision for both parties as within 2 years , in much the same way as Brian Labone had been a couple of years earlier ; Catterick had seen something in the boy and , remarkably , when Jimmy Gabriel was injured for a European Cup tie , Colin Harvey was fast-tracked as his chosen replacement .
Colin was 18 . The game was against the Italian Champions and eventual competition winners , Internazionale de Milano , and was played at the Guiseppe Meazza ( San Siro ) in front of 80,000 fans. Everton lost unluckily 1-0 , and CH acquitted himself well . Despite his showing , he would make a handful of appearances over the next 20 months , eventually establishing himself in the first team in 1964 .

Indeed , in his second game that season , his first trip to Anfield , he scored one , and made one in a magnificent 4-0 victory . He was settling in VERY nicely , thank you .
Moreover , as a local lad , his emergence had taken some of the edge off the devastation among Blues at the loss of the supremely talented Tony Kay , - given a life ban for alleged match -fixing while at his previous club , Sheffield Wednesday ; around whom , it was envisaged , we would build our next great side . Alas , it wasn’t to be , but thankfully , Colin Harvey WOULD be around for that .

The Club rallied from the Kay debacle , signed Fred Pickering , and with Harvey scoring the winner at Bolton’s ground , beat Busby’s Man’ Utd , with Best , Law and Charlton , in an F.A. Cup Semi Final , and went on to triumph at Wembley , 3-2 - after going 2-0 down , ironically , against Sheffield Wednesday .

In August 1966 , Everton signed Alan Ball . Early the following year we signed Kendall, and Ball’s , Howard Kendall’s , and Harvey’s , and all Evertonian’s lives would change forever .

This was the REAL School of Science . The midfield of only three players , Kendall , Harvey and Ball , allowed Catterick to use Morrissey , Husband or whomever as an auxiliary striker knowing it was boxed in midfield .
To anyone not privileged to have witnessed them , I shall quote no less an authority than Alan Ball ; … “ We all had Football brains . No-one could mark us . Opposing teams tried all kinds of tactics to stop us . If they handcuffed a Gorilla to us , we’d run them to death .If they wanted to play football ; we could match them at that . If they wanted to fight ; we fought them …” .

They were mustard . They complimented each other perfectly , and were rightly termed the finest English midfield of all-time . Indeed , Labby , with typical sarcasm , says , “ They were the only 3 man team to win the Title . “ As good as the rest were , it was ALL about the Holy Trinity .

In an era during which there were basically only 2 trophies up for grabs each season , and , with ourselves , Manchester United , City , the RS and Leeds ALL enjoying - to that date ; their greatest EVER sides , they finished , over 5 seasons , 3rd , 4th , 4th , 11th and Champions .
They won the F.A. Cup in 1966 , lost - still can’t believe how , but lose they did , 1-0 to a chronic WBA in 1968 . They got to the Semi Final in 68 , 69 , and ‘71 .
In short , they were ALWAYS in the hunt , and incidentally , were denied qualification for Europe due to the ridiculous 1 Club , 1 City , European rule , given that our Homicidal Relatives had finished above us .
Colin Harvey , of course , enjoyed the best years of his career . They all did , but Colin could play . REALLY play . In the wake of the 1966 World Cup , having witnessed the man himself at Chez Goodison , and in an act of enormous flattery , Evertonians christened Colin ,The White Pele .
He was called , “ A magical footballer ,.. “ by Kenneth - “ They think it’s all over ,… “ Wolstenholme .

Just on this ; Evertonians are not ones to toss out such sobrqiuets with the post . Only THE VERY best are so ordained . The Golden Vision ; The Greatest of Them All , and now , The White Pele - the ONLY White Pele , Mancs , btw . Praise indeed , if only by association .
I had a limited exposure to Colin Harvey , from age 5 to about 9 / 10 , but I recall him being as close to anything I’ve seen to Paul Scholes . Only more mobile . He was a SUPERB tackler , unlike ginger , but could scrap if it was needed , and it often would be , would cover every blade of grass and was an awesome passer of a ball , able to stop dead whilst on the run , a swivle of those hips , and , BANG , 40 yard ball to over-lapper , to his fukn feet , btw .
He was , as I say , as good as ANYTHING around , and , according to me Da’ , and many others , if he’d have had Bally’s goals , he would have gotten 30 caps . As it went , he got his only cap against Malta , in 1971 . Ironic really that goals were his major flaw , but allied to his Anfield goal , he scored , as I said , a Semi Final winner against the Mancs , then clinched the Title against W.B.A. in 1970 . A scorer of IMPORTANT goals rather than prolific .

As the School of Science side broke up , Labby retired , Bally sold from under us , Colin struggled with a persistent hip injury , and after 2 years of intermittent involvement , was sold to Sheffield Wednesday in 1974 , for £70,000 . He would only last a year or so , before having to retire from Football with chronic hip problems . He underwent a hip replacement in the late 70’s .
Nevertheless , he was delighted , when Billy Bingham , the then Everton manager , and the man whom had sold him , called and asked if Colin fancied taking over Youth Team duties ?
He prospered . As good a player as he was , and he was MUSTARD , many , Colin Harvey among them , believe that he found his vocation in coaching . He helped bring through , McMahon , Stevens , Ratcliffe , before , with the return of his good friend and team mate , Howard Kendall , as Everton boss in August 1981 , Harvey was promoted to reserve team coach .

Results over the next two years never quite materialised , thus Colin was promoted to first team coach . Neither he , nor the club , looked back . He was hugely instrumental in the most sustained period of success in the history of our great club , winning two Championships , a second place , 3 F.A. Cup Finals , 1 win , and a replayed loss in the Milk/League Cup Final ,and of course the winning of the club‘s only European trophy to date . Lifting the European Cup Winner‘s Cup in Rotterdam against Rapid Vienna ..
Individuals like Sharp , Reid , Southall , Ratcliffe , all cite Colin is perhaps THE major factor in the turnaround . Indeed , Reidy reckons he was still the best player in training , even WITH a hip-replacement .
With the defection of Kendall in 1987 to the Basque-lands , it was a testament to Colin Harvey’s standing amongst his colleagues , Evertonians and the Football world , that he was , despite having no First Team Leadership experience whatsoever , on a shortlist of 1 , and accepted the position of Everton Manager in June 1987 . Thereby becoming unique in nearly 110 years of Everton Football Club , in holding all significant positions on the playing side ; Youth Team , Reserve Team , First Team , First Team captain . He now achieved the same on the Managerial side ; Youth Team Coach , Reserve Team Coach , First Team Coach , and First Team Manager - He even did a tad Scouting for Joe Royle , for the pedants .

The after effects of Heysel precipitated the break up of the Championship side ; Stevens had gone , Reid was Q.P.R. bound , Lineker and Gray were no more . Thus , Colin , backed by the board , made a Magnificent 7 type gesture - uny with 5 . He brought in Neil McDonald , Stuart McCall , Norman Whiteside , Pat Nevin and a British Record Fee - £2.2m , Tony Cottee from West Ham . And it all began swimmingly . An opening day battering of the barcodes 4-0 ,with Cottee getting a hat-trick - me boy’s first game , as it goes ; was a relatively false dawn .
We had traded downwards , generally , on players , and were no longer Title contenders . We were still punching in the Cups but our best under Harvey were a defeat in the second all Merseyside , and Hillsborough Final in 1989 , 3-2 a.e.t. , in a cracker of a game . We also had a League Cup Semi Final defeat to Arsenal the previous season ( AND a trip to Wembley in the Simod Cup . Lost 3-4 to Forest ‘89 . Took me boy . In their end . He was 4 with a stripey Everton kit on ,… LONG story , btw Boss game , though ) . We basically meandered for a year or so , before we were all gob smacked when HK walked back in from Man City , quoting the difference between a fling and a marraige , and promptly appointed his arl mucka as his #2 .

To me , this was Colin Harvey’s consumate gesture as an Evertonian , as I don’t care WHO you are , if Everton relieve you of the Manager’s role , and then ask you to be your mate’s second man , that has GOTTA HURT . Yet , Colin Harvey being Colin Harvey , took one for the team - literally , and swallowed his pride for the betterment of Everton Football Club , an’ I FUKN LOVE HIM for it , me .
As we all know , HK#2 , didn’t stick to the script and being denied the chance to purchase Dion Dublin , Howard decided to , “ Do one “ , again . He walked and we got Walker .
This left Colin in a quandary as , with the arrival of Ex- Norwich Manager , he was deemed surplus to requirements and soon went to join the then Oldham manager , Graeme Sharp , as Coach.

However , after leaving Oldham and doing a touch of scouting for another ex-teamate and then Everton Manager , Joe Royle , with Howard Kendall’s Third Coming , he was bedded in as Youth Team Supremo , once more . He oversaw the F.A. Youth Cup Triumph of 1998 with Leon Osman as Skipper .However , his finest achievement , and indeed one on par with ANY Coach in England for the past 2 decades , was his role in the blossoming of Wayne Rooney . The player himself , and his Family lauding Colin Harvey’s input at various stages of his development . Thereby saving the Club millions of pounds.
Unfortunately , he was forced to retire altogether from Football , in 2003 . Finally succumbing to the years of agony he had endured via his hips - which , incidentally , did NOT lie , and told him they needed replacing , again !!!
It was the saddest day of his life . THAT is how much of a Blue that this man is .
Quite rightly he was inducted as an Everton Great in the Club’s Hall of Fame , in 2008 .

On a couple of personal notes ; I had the picture of Colin Harvey , Joe Royle and Bally walking up a street in Malta the day before the game , on me bedroom wall as a kid . I‘d lie looking at it for hours . They had those DEAD funky England Trackies on - I had a clue , btw , even at 7 ; and to me , were just about the coolest mufukas on the PLANET .
Alas , Bally was ripped from our collective bosum that Christmas , so the photie had to go .
Still , I remember it fondly .

Secondly , and thirdly as it goes , I am invoking the whole Dieification thing , the Confessional aspect of it particularly ; During Mrs. Thatcher’s reign as Premier of Great Britain and Northern Ireland , I had occasion to leave Liverpool / Merseyside to seek work , as did many others . Anyway , without going into a cat’s arse of details as to why , I required an alternative name under which to be employed on a series of building sites in the South of England . I figured that Alan Ball , and even Howard Kendall would surely be spotted by some beer-fogged Ganger-Man one of these days . Thus , I settled upon Colin Harvey . Just ordinary enough to be coincidence , whilst still retaining a legitimacy and a familiarity should I ever be pulled . However , in all truth , I can remember 3 / 4 occasions with Bosses shouting at me , “ Colin !!! Colin !!! Colin Harvey ,..!!! “ An’ I’m just doing my [Poor language removed] . Heard them as clear as anything , but just never registered . Then , I had to go , “ Oh , sorry . You mean COLIN ,COLIN HARVEY ??? ” - as opposed to Holin Carvey , you tit , … or some such feeble counter- blag .
So , Colin , Fratelli , should you have received a tax return or some [Poor language removed] - it should actually have been in your favour , btw , plus I had a different YEAR of birth to you , kid ; but my conscience convinced me , against logic that you might . Thus , if so , I’m dead sorry . Dead , dead sorry .

However , NOT actually sorry enough to resist the temptation to once more become The White Pele ; when those Britannia Music Club things were out - AN’ C.D’s were about £15 each ;
I admit that yet again , I donned the overcoat that was my pseudo-existence as ( another ) member of the Holy Trinity .Thus , in much the same way as the Taxman ; SHOULD a geezer ever knock on your door and say , “ You owe us 150 Compact Discs ,.. “ Tell him , it was REALLY me , but that I have had a sex-change , got married , adopted me new spouse’s Sri Lankan name , and am currently resident in Ghana .
But Dude , I was just trying put a crust on me kids’ plates - AN’ a CD in the stereo , as well of course , but my point remains valid . It was BECAUSE you were such a Hero that I chose you , cocka’ . Kind of warped flattery , if you will .
Anyway , I trust we can now put it behind us , and move on …??? . Cheers , lid .

For the rest of the Congregation ‘; It is NEVER too late to cleanse one’s soul , and forgiveness is POWER .

This Domingo , thank the Almighty for creating ( Sir ) Colin Harvey - The White Pele .
An Everton Legend in EVERY sense of the word .

May the Good Lord be with you all ,

Look after your peoples ,

Peace Out .

The ( Catholic ) Reverend L.C.A.B .

Thanks LCAB. He was a feller fundamental to our two most successful eras - you couldn't have picked a better subject. By the way, everyone did that Brittania cd scam.

Fantastic yet again, I always look forward to these. What an Evertonian and great man. Cheers lcab. I used to be William Bonney (billy the kid) to Brittania myself, I was about 10 and young guns was just out.

Had the chance to meet Colin when I visited Bellefield in early October, 1990 to watch the team train. He was on the hot seat at the time -- I think he knew his days as manger were numbered -- yet we had a very nice chat about the team and he was a perfect gentleman. Even got an autograph of one of the players -- the name escapes me now -- for my cousin to complete the set of first-teamers from that season.
