The Rodwell Incident

Sorry about the cheesy thread title.

But on a serious note I was watching Rodwell for the u21s the other night and safe to say he had a mare and was dragged off at HT.

Perhaps he is being coached in the wrong way. He was tasked with the holding midfielder role and as such, you can't really argue with his short crabby passing that much. However, I don't think he made one tackle all night...he just seems to jockey every opponent without ever putting a foot in which for me makes him a poor holding midfielder.

I don't know whether its a coaching issue or maybe it's time to get him back to Centre half and start again because his development has really slowed in the last 12 months.

Thoughts?

I want him to succeed so much but atm it looks like he's gunna end up not making it at all.

He lacks confidence maybe idk.

I hope he doesn't follow the growing list of young potential superkids to not succeed. Branch , Kenny , Jeffers , Ball(Michael of course) etc.

Why do people think he's a centre half?

I've only seen him play there once and it was a friendly, he already dauldes in possession in advanced positions so I'd be thoroughly bricking it if he was tasked with sweeping up oppositions attacks so close to his own goal.

I dunno what's up with him, is he believing his own hype and allowing complacency to creep in? Or is he just not very good?

Back end of the 08/09 he looked so promising too, a few classy goals the following season aside he's literally done nout.

He just needs to express himself, and that's down to him really, I very much doubt Moyes tells him not to play difficult passes, because you do see it in glimpses. I watched the first under 21 game and he made three of four excellent raking passes, and showed some lovely footwork at times, but the balance isn't right. He passes on responsibility far too much and is happy to drift in and out of the game. There's nothing wrong with being disciplined in possession, and it's good that he has that base, but he needs to expand on that and evolve.

The attributes are all there, he has alot of going for him, but a change in mentality is needed if he's going to kick on or develop into the player the majority of us know he can be.

I think he played CB when he was in the youth teams etc if I'm not wrong.

For me he needs to play as a box to box centre mid rather than this holding ****e. At the moment he's not making the msot of his pace and power and should be driving forward at every opportunity.

Thats the only bit I disagree with.

I think most fans would gladly sell him to Stoke for 5m at the moment.

But I do agree with what your saying, I think I said last Year, Jack Rodwell can be whatever he wants to be, but he needs to want to be it. He has so much talent, he just lacks confidence at the moment.

He will come good.

Word for word I agree with that

He's got Bilyaletdinovsyndrome at the moment

I remember reading Darren Fletcher talking about the effect Roy Keane had on him during that period when he slated all their players. It drilled into him the importance of the correct mental attitude and how that can make the difference in a big game. I think Jack could use a similar kind of lesson, one of the older boys to take him under his wing a bit, make him realise how much he wants to be a top player. It's a shame we don't have players like that around really.

Unfortunately, I think he has every physical attribute to succeed, but zero mental attributes. I think he's timid.

He's got all the physical attributes and he does have a footballing brain too. The only problem is confidence. Because of that I think he will still be a star, he just needs a sustained run in the team, a bit of self-belief and maybe a wise word or two in his ear.

I hope we can see him partner Felli in a 4-2-3-1 this year. That's where he's looked best since the highs of that United goal.
