The Pre-Season Optimism Thread

Oh dear, someone needs a hug.

Good thread btw, i'm well optimistic, pre-season's been good so far, for a change our players don't look like complete strangers to one-another and appear to enjoy their footie, and like to think we'll be surprised in the US by how well we do, leaving us with confidence going into the season.
Obviously lurking at the back of my mind is Martinez's relegation and has he learned and adapted to the experience, and also the spectre of potentially spunkin >10mil on another Wigan player that MAY not work out. But it's a win-win situation really for us, 'cos if the board've employed someone incapable, they'll be gone a lot sooner, but I hope they've made the right choice and that this is the start of a successful reign for Roberto, where the priority is good flowing football and a solid skillful academy that permits us to compete at European level consistently.

For me I'm optimistic we'll be entertained while finishing 7th/8th, rather than limping to 7th/8th. I'm optimistic a top 6 team will win both cups (with the fa cup final being against another top 6 team) and that we'll qualify for Europe this way.

I'm dreaming of qualifying for Europe through the league.

John Heitinga played 26 games last season, this season he won't play any - 26 games where we will have a stronger defence. Unless there's a catastrophe.

Coleman played 26 league games last season, many as substitute, should hopefully hit the ground running this time.

Mirrallas - Same as coleman, expect him to be even better.

Kone - Strong powerful, good shot, quick, could be the perfect foil for Jelavic.

Jelavic - can't be any worse than last season.

Delosfoulueo - Looks a great player.

Barkley - Will surely play a bigger part.

Pienaar - Missed a few games due to silly red cards and wasn't firing on all cylinders, can hopefully improve on what he's shown.

Stones to provide depth at the back.

Basically, we\re going to win the league.

Im pretty excited if im to be honest being sitting on the fence mainly this campaign but being super impressed so far like on the weekend when we made all the changes and switched to a 3-6-1 I was like wut? but we played some sincilating footy and that surprised me the fact I have no feckn idea how we will line up against Norwich proves that

the pro and anti Moyes arguments seem to be getting out of kilter. He came in to a fire-fighting situation and was exactly the man for the job to the extent where we looked to be a team capable of regularly challenging top four. at this point we could have began to cement from behind the scenes while Moyes was given freedom to experiment with a more attacking style. We didn't. It may have been the right decision as maybe we weren't ready to do that. It was clearly not Moyes approach alone though. pragmatism turned into caution. this played against us more than it did us any favours. The original poster pointed out that one of key reasons we fell short of top 4 last season was defending deep without attacking options, this looks already to have been more obvious to someone coming in from the outside.
Moyes may not have felt supported in his ambitions or may not have had he right people around him but our successes last year were starting to look like the legacy of the rest of his era and nothing to do with progress being made at the time. It is a shame as I think he was at the right club but too much of a cautious mindset had set in. The idea that it was Moyes alone that was keeping us from freefall was also becoming damaging to everyone. Martinez may have walked into the right club for him because Moyes has left a blueprint of the areas he may have to learn in. Lots of optimism and Moyes has played his part

Hopefully this season is a breath of fresh air. And good smelling air. Not relegation fodder air. Willing to be optimistic to start.
