I'll have a go.
Despite being absolutely abject this season, we are only 5 points off seventh. Now I know we spent a fortune in the summer, but so did most of the top 6 - Arsenal and Chelsea bought in very good international strikers in Lacazette and Morata (and now have aubamayang and Giroud), the [Poor language removed] brought in the best player in the league, Man City added to an already outstanding nucleus and strengthened in their weak areas, Utd spent a fortune a and bought Rom and Matic and Lindelof (and obviously now have Sanchez). Spurs bought Davinson Sanchez and Llorente - both better than anything we have.
They all strengthened from an outstanding foundation, whilst we completely lost ours. So like it or not, this season was always going to be about trying to remain the best of the rest whilst rebuilding our foundation. That always takes time. It has taken United 3 seasons! I believe we will finish seventh, but let's see. This summer, we do need (somehow) to make marquee signings.
We have three international players finally back from potentially career ending injuries and we will only get stronger as they get more games. One of those is the best all round player in his position in the Premier League IMO. I also think that the recent departures have seen the 'angsty' characters removed from the squad, which will hopefully help team spirit.
We have played most of the top teams twice now - just the [Poor language removed] and Man City (both at home to go). I'm not sure if any other teams in the league have played as many of the big 6 at this stage as we have. This makes our case for seventh even stronger.
And lastly (as much as I don't rate him) I think Sam is finally beginning to realise the main culprits of dross in the squad (Williams, Schneiderlin, Keane) after the Arsenal performance. We will see how he responds with his next team selection, but for me that performance was the low point in the season and you know what they say - it is always the darkest before the dawn.
Onwards and upwards!
