The Pet Advice Thread

This is a thread for people having animal problems.

Like me and mrs Ijjy are.

Now my cats (about 1 and a half now) are experiencing their first proper summer. And they are loving it.

Out all day. In when they feel like it. But. There's a but. They keep bringing home baby birds. And they are bloody possessive of them!

Is there anything anyone can advise as it's quite horrendous. The other day one of them just kept bringing them in. Every time I disposed of one another was there.

I've read about bells on collars to warn the bird, but that won't work. I know it's just their nature but it's nasty!

I've tried sawdust. I've suggested eating the cats. I've suggested leaving them inside but that seems cruel.

What to do? Any advice would be great.

For those interested the latest score is:

Maverick 7 Maximillion 4

My cat is smashing it to be fair.

I'm sure I read a while ago that you can get collars for cats which emit a loud noise when they make a sudden movement. So like a bell, but only louder. Can't imagine that to be too nice to live with though.

have you tried the bells on there collars??? some of them are rubbish and make basically no noise but if you can find some good ones it could work

Ive just moved but my old place my boy cat used to bring full sized birds and rats into the house. I lived close to town and they had rich pickings.

Trouble is they werent always dead and at 4 in the morning trying to catch a rat that was petrified and just come out of my cats mouse is no fun. In short- I dont think there is anything you can do. Get them a new toy maybe??

Keep them inside more.

Domestic cats kill billions of birds and small mammals each year (275 million in the UK alone). They are decimating indigenous populations and are especially problematic if you live near rare habitats (which looks a bit like hares and rabbits) - though not sure if you have them in Middle Earth or Hampshire or where ever it is you live.

Seriously though, try and keep them inside more, you can't really stop cats being cats so it's the only way really.

Seems cruel to me putting a bell on an animals neck. Must drive them mad. Don't think there's much you can do except take them to some anger management classes.

The bell will work as it'll warn the parents of the chicks they're grabbing

Just keep the cat flap shut & they can't bring them in
