The Oldies Thread

...always had good footy teams, we beat them in an Echo Cup quarter final at their place on our way to winning it, but it was the most difficult game we had.

Loved school footy. Every Saturday morning, and early dart for midweek games.
School then LBA game in the afternoon...tell the kids that now, and they won't believe you.

....I never went down the LBA route but it was big back in the day. Usually school in the morning, Goodison in the afternoon for me. Those were the days, score a few goals yourself then a few hours later walking up that last flight of stairs in Upper Gwladys St and the pitch slowly came into view.

They're not all bad. Had a french teacher Mr White, when he wasn't making us conjugate verbs you could sidetrack him and get him banging on about all sorts of topics.
Learned a lot of, at the time, stuff we had no idea about...aka treated us like semi grown up people
My history teacher, when bored, put on Monty Python records. Best teacher I had.

Did you play for Highfield?

Did you play for Highfield?

....nope, they were never amongst the top footy schools in my time although they did have a Liverpool Schoolboy player during that time. I went to John Hamilton which became Breckfield quite a while after I left but no longer exists. De La Salle, Gateacre Comp and the Institute were decent in my years.

De La Salle, Cardinal Heenan and SFX seem to be the best in the modern era.

Our music teacher in about 1963 let us bring in our own records once a week. It was great (fab in fact) although on reflection it seems a little lazy on his part because he just sat there tapping his feet. It's not like he was analysing the tracks or anything. Mind you, how can you analyse Bits and Pieces by Dave Clark Five? Difficult, man.

St Sylvester's always had a good team. I remember just after the war that we had a football team (St Matthews, Richard Kelly Drive) but we didn't have any jerseys. You had to have clothing coupons (as well as money!) St. Mary's Woolton donated a set of jerseys which were very faded. One of the parents volunteered to dye them. When they came back, he had dyed them brown. So we played in brown shirts for a couple of years until we had enough money and enough coupons to get a new set. On the night before my first ever game for the school team I was so excited that I couldn't sleep. I finally got to sleep but had a nightmare. I dreamt that I turned up at the meeting place but was late and everyone had gone! (True that).

Also had a great French teacher Miss Verrill. She regaled us with tales of her student days in Paris before the war. Must have learned some French though, I managed to pass my O level.

....St Sylvesters was Scotty Rd I think, and yes they had some players from that area (a couple of my drinking buddies went there) I remember St Matthews from my time. I went to Rathbone junior school off Edge Lane and your story of the shirts reminded me that we played in thick old rugby shirts that must’ve been donated from somewhere.

The footy teachers were so dedicated giving up their time of a Saturday after working all week.

Eggs, In about 1983 I was in Liverpool doing some business with Mersey Docks and Harbour Board. I finished a bit earlier than I expected and decided to call in at St Matthews on my way back down south. It was a Thursday and the headmaster invited me into his study. He then told me that the school was closing for good the very next day. 30 odd years since I left and I made it with 24 hours to spare! Coincidence or what! You are dead right about the teachers.

Depending where the match was might get back for half-time and get in through the pass-out gate (one of my friends was the son of an ex- player) if not, three quarter time and hope to see a goal or two.

Didn't SFX go on to win the national? Can remember playing against Roughwood in Kirkby and having to climb down into a stream to get the ball. SMA were one of the better sides in my day, they put us out of the Echo Cup.Went to Penny Lane for Liverpool Schoolboy trials but the Kopite saunders just told the three of us from my school to go off and practice two touch and never really spoke to us much again.
