One of my pocket money jobs was filling and lighting the little paraffin lamp that was used to stop the water pipe from freezing in the Winter. 1962 was a tough year.

I did a paper round that winter,it was cruel.

I seem to remember a friendly against a Scottish team after the piles of straw were taken off the Goodison pitch after the weather finally broke and the First Division games restarted. Or maybe my memory is faulty.
