1970 was the last set of pre-decimal coinage issued
….we’d collect wood for weeks and leave it in our back yards so nobody would nick it. Massive bonfires on the ‘ollers’ in Everton;
Did you use the Banknotes that Mickey Thomas gave you.
We had a disused colliery railway line which ran past the end of the street. We used to have cracking bonfires.
I cringe when I see how much original old sleepers fetch now. £££££££

For their benefit, an 'oller' was short for 'hollow ground' - an open space created by German bombing in World War 2.

Growing up in Birkenhead, Illchester Square was a no go on Bommie night. Fire engines and police cars lining our street. tried to ruin it for the rest of us . but we always managed to find a site every year off the beaten tracks and started gathering wood toward the end of the summer holidays from school.
