All questions/tips/suggestions in here! I'll start. How do i stop a 4yr old from scratching chickenpox? Or make them stop itching? I've tried calamine, antihystamines, calpol, bicarb in the bath and moisturiser. Anything else i can do?

i'm a paediatrician.

you've pretty much done everything you can.

  • Manage itch in patients with varicella with cool compresses and regular bathing.
  • Discourage scratching to avoid scarring. Trimming the child's fingernails and having the child wear mittens while sleeping may reduce scratching.
you can use vaseline too.

have they started crusting yet? are new crops appearing? how many days has it been?

Ask him if he wants to be a leopard and show him a picture. If he says yes then say it's vital that he leaves the spots there to develop and doesn't scratch them off otherwise they will look rubbish compared to the other leopards. If he says no then say that if he scratches them off then they'll never heal and he'll eventually turn into a leopard.

He's really poorly now and feeling sorry for himself, just gone to sleep so fingers crossed he gets a decent kip and is brighter when he wakes up

That's quite brilliant.

He's got them under his hair on his scalp, any idea how i stop them itching? Can't really put calamine on them!

you can give Ibruprofen at the same time as the calpol,
keep his nails short and clean, if you can some soft mittens,
other wise your doing all you can, how old is he?
seven or younger lots of cuddles
