Some harsh things written about Garbutt earlier in the thread. The games he played in the PL last year showed he had the potential to develop into a sound defender, and was the best crosser of the ball from full back that we have. The problems seemed to arise around his contract being due to expire, with Galloway getting ahead of him and taking the opportunity. We lost two promising youngsters at about the same time, Chris Long , John Lundstram who decided not to take up new contracts, most people just shrugged their shoulders and wished them well. Garbutt was different, he had shown genuine class and potential at PL level and there was a danger of us losing him. Hence the fume at the time, if he didn't have talent or unlikely to make it nobody would have cared.
It's hard to tell how successful his current loan at Fulham is. Certainly his early games and then injury meant a poor start . But he's playing regularly now and hopefully benefitting from it. He's 23 later this season so the last thing he needs is another loan spell next season. Assess him alongside BO and Baines in pre season and take it from there, best option would be to keep all three. If we were willing to pay £4mill for that Leeds FB then at worst we should get a reasonable sum for Garbutt, but my inclination is to see how he goes pre season , as he's the type of attacking FB we are always trying to develop.

Long term is Oviedo and Garbutt.

I think Baines may get the move to midfield tbh from what we saw on the Saturday.

(When Barry was looking like coming off, Baines was the one told to warm up)

It's a shame for Garbutt, but you'd have to go with Oviedo as he's played really well when he's come into the side this season. Baines is of course 31, but that's probably not old enough for him to be gradually phased out for Oviedo/Garbutt to be longer term options.

Nice problem to have I guess.

Oviedo covered well at rightback the other day, so him and Baines for the versatility. But this versatily also means we could potentially keep 3 leftbacks in the squad at once.

Seems that Oviedo is in possession the shirt now thanks originally to Baines being rested.

I like Bryan, especially away from home as he's rapid and offers a real counter attacking threat.

I don't think he should be dropped in any way, but looking forward to seeing how Baines responds.

Yep spot on.

Same with the Stones and Mori situation as well.

Happy for Oviedo though and he's showing what a good player he is.

Absolutely, it is testament to Funes Mori and Oviedo for continuing the good form.

Who would have thought that when we rejected the Stones bids that we'd be sitting here with him benched 6 months later!

Going by whats happening now you would have to pick bainsey and ovideo but all 3 seem prone to injury.hard to know.i wish we had the same problem right side.

By the sound of it garbutt has had a poor season at fulham so i would loan him out next season as well an go with bainsey and oviedo

Garbutt is still all potential. As others have said, he's not exactly setting the football world alight at Fulham. Baines is class, but possibly on the decline. Oviedo on his day isn't far behind baines, but needs to prove he can stay injury free to merit the jersey. Baines and Oviedo for at least another season for me, with garbutt staying out on loan.

If i had to pick then i'd let baines go.

He isn't getting any younger and in the grand scheme of things, having two younger fullbacks over the old one isn't a bad thing.

Wouldn't be surprised if Baines gets one start this week and Oviedo the other with the quarterfinal coming up. I wouldn't be surprised to see some squad rotation in general (Kone, Geri, Kev and Lennon all getting starts) so everyone is mentally and physically fresh heading into that match - El Bob knows how big that game is for the squad and fans.
