The Clash are the best band in the world ever (in the whole history of ever-ness)

Smart mofos with a real voice and some fantastic lyrics, but the vast majority of the music left me cold. But unlike other bands that people often claim as their favourite ever, I can understand this one. A very important group in the context of popular music.

I really must check out that Strummer documentary.

I only recently discovered The Clash, having lumped them in with all the other punk bands back in the 70s. Some of their stuff demands a few listens. Quirky lyrics and big reggae influence I'd say.

At the time though I preferred The Jam. Good hair.

The Jam's output seems pretty bulletproof, massive quality to dross ratio. Whereas the Clash put out some bobbins in their time.
Saying that, Paul Weller's subsequent work has been consistently horrific for 30 years plus, so it sort of casts a shadow on the Jam.

Can't actually think offhand of someone from a great band, and a main creative force at that, who's solo stuff is as bad as Weller's. Going from the Jam to the Style Council must be some sort of record - we've never seen someone capable of spanning those two levels in music before.
