...I'm old and a lot of these things go over my head. I've seen the term Gif elsewhere on this site. Can somebody tell me what it stands for please?

Graphics Interchange Format. It's just a format for saving images.

The term Gif tends to be used to mean animated images, like the one I posted above, because that's what the format does best. JPG's for contrast tend to be static images instead but you can have static gifs too.

Am I right in thinking that a GIF is basically a mini slideshow where you can set how many frames per second etc??
