Lordy these type of threads always miss people out and surely for us to make a judgement on a sportsman we'd have had to have seen him at least on the TV?

Any X-Game is hobby, and just a way to sell products. Sport has to be more than that.

Are you mental?

Tony Hawks is the Ali of pro skating. Pro standing for PROFESSIONAL, as in that's his job (lucky get). Of course it's a sport.

You could also argue that Shaun White should be in your list for what he's done for snowboarding.

Sound a bit narrow minded calling them hobbies. Not sure how well they'd take you calling their livelihoods a hobby.

I've heard many say Golf is a hobby, not a sport. A well paying one, mind.
IMO Tony Hawk is what Tiger is to Golf, Jordan to Basketball, Schumacher to F1.

Close to being an Olympic Sport, then is it?

Come on, Skateboarding is a total hobby. Tony Hawk did alright, but I'm pretty sure doing one move (the 920 or something, right) and then releasing a highly successful video game franchise isn't a free pass to stand anywhere near anyone on the list.

And Sean White? Snowboarding. People go to the snow to have fun and mess about. No more a 'sport' than Monopoly or Train Spotting. We have the Winter Olympics to give the Mountain-folk a chance at winning something Sporting-wise. Nothing more.

It's both. That's the beauty of it. What sort of competition is Skateboarding? Is it a race? Is it a series of obstacles? Is it a half pipe? Its a past-time for mis-spent youth and deserves no mention among the Sporting Pantheon of Eliteness.

I'd put skateboarding in a similar category to gymnastics mate. There's certain moves that you do within a routine to score well, but it's free in its rules.

Stop being an old fart and accept these new things, you'll be saying Twenty20 isn't real cricket next :P
