just been reading a few articles about the future of consoles.
apparantly xbox are refusing to install blu ray on there current and future projects(next xbox = minimum 2/3years away).

now this is not only becouse they dont want to pay there rivals (sony) but also becouse they reckon the blu ray format or 'in the hand ' media is dead/dying and has no future.

now i like the ps3 but its accused of being nothing more than a glorified over priced blu ray player , xbox is cheaper and has better online content (but doesnt play bluray or have a web browser), it outsells the ps3 approx 2-1, the wii isnt hi def and doesnt play blu ray or even dvd , but it is outselling the xbox and ps3 combined approx 2-1.

one article i read says that when hd dvd fell through , the sale of bluray disks and players should have increased but if anything the sales rates havent increased anywhere nere the expected levels for a so called dominant technology.
(85% of all blu ray players in homes are ps3's).
wii , ipod and iphone sales figures are proof that consumers are still spending on the 'right' product but in this case are still content with using a plain old dvd for a cheaper price.

another interesting point is that games developers are not taking too kindly to the blu ray game format.(apparently blu ray is pretty much still a beta format and often has teething problems)

now microsoft reckon the future is actually in downloading games straight to a hard drive over your internet connection and there will be no need for a 'disk drive' as such.

a lot of people are saying this wont work due to harddrive sizes and bandwidth caps , aswell as the fact not everyone uses the internet and many would still want to buy a product from a shop which you can hold in your hand (ie a dvd or blu ray game/film).

but i can see what microsoft are getting at.

with 50 mb uncapped internet connections being rolled out this year (virginmedia started yesterday) , i cant see downloading games/films/music being a problem as long as the next xbox/ps has atleast a terabyte + hard drive .
also , instead of buying the disk i cant see any reason why you cant have a few gig memory stick which you take to a shop , buy the game , which is then ported onto your memory stick , the stick is then placed into your console and ports the game to your harddrive.
this will save on the costs of manufacturing the disks and the packaging which would reduce the cost to the consumer.(no more stacks of dvd cases and no more scratched disks problems aswell)

with the game running from the hardrive it would result in bigger games with faster load times.

so my question ? is dvd , hd dvd (dead already )and bluray a technology thats worth investing in ?

or are memory sticks , hard drives and downloads the future of purchasing and playing media ?

Only problem I can see is there is no way of trading in games you don't play anymore. I took a load back last week and got £75 and that would be a thing of the past if it was all downloadable content.

When Blu-Ray drops to the price of dvd then more people will buy it i reckon but I can't see that much difference in picture quality from dvd to Blu-ray so I won't be buying one soon

Do Blu-ray player support mainstream DVD? If not then a lot of people have just dumped their old video collection a few years ago only to now be told they have to replace their DVD collection and that means people will just think Blu-Ray will be outdated in a couple of years so they may as well wait for something revolutionary not evolutionary

good point about trading games , it will be the end of that (the console makers would love it as they must lose a fair bit of potential revenue through 'recycled' buying).
but the same has happened with music . you cant sell an mp3 but you could sell a cd tape or vinyl .

then again , if a download only costs me £15 for a game which is £40 on disk , then i wouldnt be too bothered at missing out on the trade -in.

blu ray does play dvd btw.
just to note that even though hd dvd is dead , a xbox hd dvd drive is now available for 12.99 from game. it may be a dead format but theres plenty of cheap hd dvd's available , im also sure the hd dvd drive optimises normal dvds aswell.

I definitely agree if the prices are reduced significantly but tbh mate I can't see it, just look at xbox live arcade games, the price of them is pretty shocking when you consider what they are

The like of sonic, paperboy etc. are nearly £4 and the decent arcade games are £8, even the original xbox game downloads, which can be picked up at Game for pennies now are £10 each on xbox live so I can't see them selling new games for anything less than £40

By the way, just bought a 160g HDD to replace the one I got with the console and transferred all of my games, saves etc. to the new one. Now I can't use any arcade games on any profile on my xbox apart from mine, most of the arcade games are my other halfs and she paid for them. Called xbox and they say its an anti piracy measure, WTF, I haven't told her yet but she's gonna be pissed off

I've never owned a games console since my psone about a decade ago. Because games are stupidly expensive (ok you could chip a console but the quality was [Poor language removed]). Now I've just bought couple of NDS's because I can download the games for free onto a memory stick.

I have downloaded my films for about 5 years. I have absolutely no DVD's, don't even know what blue ray is. Never new HD Dvd even started never mind folded.

I dont expect I am the only one, for me, downloading will and has been for some time, the future.

I love the Knock off Nigel adverts, its as if they think you will think, "[Poor language removed] i better stop downloading games and films, because people will laugh and point at me".

Got my fingers burnt way to many times years ago with buying [Poor language removed] games for £40 a pop. And utter crap films that you spend your hard earned on.

Downloading is Evil and im going to hell, but at least im going to hell with cash in pocket.

I've not moved on from my ps2 yet, I used to think I'd deffo get a pS3, but I honestly think they're jarg. If a basic Xbox is £130 or something when I get around to it I'm deffo getting one. I understand why Wii is popular, but Nintendo always seemed to have silly or childish games. Plus Mario Kart isn't even good. So yes, downloaded new games are the future I think. Atm hd TVs are too expensive.

another plus to memory sticks is flash memory = no loading time. that is one of my biggest complaints with newer gaming systems

the game cartridges, used all the way up to the nintendo 64, worked very similarly to flash memory, which is why you didn't have to load games. call me impatient but i don't like having to stare at a loading screen. video game companies made the switch disks because the materials are cheaper, yet they didn't pass the savings onto consumers... video games are more expensive then ever.

downloading is definitely the way of the future, the progression of gaming is all about material efficiency.

a microsd is about the size of my little finger nail, you can fit on it 2mb, there are bigger capacity cards but r4 only supports 2gb, you can fit 50+ games on it. this has to be the future instead of cd/dvd. the thing i worry about is photos and video stored digitally, i dont trust cd/dvd as can get damaged so i think memory cards/hard drives are probably the "safest" option for them too.

I own a PS3 but I dont own any Blu Ray dvds. I'm not buying films that Ive already got on DVD.

Its a different playing field than console wars before because the Wii is a kid centered console. PS3 and XBOX are for the grown up gamers, and on sales all the info is here VG Chartz.com - Video Game Sales Charts - Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft, Wii, PS3, Xbox360, DS, PSP, PC

And as for downloading games, it will be the norm when the internet gets a hell of alot faster. You cant just kill the whole manufacturing, distribution and retail industries overnight.

how fast do you want it ffs i can get 50mb broadband.

Apple already do this with iTunes. With music, and now movies. So for Microsoft to say that is pretty much typical of the company.

ive been reading up on virgin 50 mb.
apparently a full hi def film can be downloaded in 15 minutes
a normal film = 3 minutes
a whole music album in 1.11 seconds
a tv show in 60 seconds

im with you , i think thats fast enough for starters.(y)

ghost mentioned - apple . and thats a very good case and example that the 'future' technology is already in use and succesful for music.(xboxlive is also offering media download services -although theres lots of room for improovement)
but it wasnt microsoft jumping on the band wagon that shocked me , its that sony arent going to follow the trend .

btw = basilfawlty , did your mrs download the games with her gamertag ? if so , im sure all she has to do is re download them (there free to re-download once bought)

Desaparecido - i will give you and all the other got users a huge tip , when buying a hd tv - FIND THE ARGOS DISCOUNT STORES - theres one in corby and one in walsall.a mate of mine got a £900 hdtv for £350-mint.(the price would have dropped more since then too).after xmas these shops will be stocked to the roof with very good 'returned goods' bargains.try and get hdfull , unless like me , every penny counts and you have to settle for hd ready(good enough).

Number_25 - theres a few of us on xbox. your welcome to add me , if you play online.(btw we all have to get a game together over the holidays !!!!)
