Player Valuation: £8m
Shkodran Mustafi - 17 - CB allegedly
Luke Garbutt - 16 - LB
They are only two recent signings, but is the academy/youth setup looking to secure potential quality to bolster and surpass the current first team in years to come? Simply put, would Moyes cash in on the likes of Baines (LB) and Jagielka (CB) if in 5 or so years certain prospects make it? Thereby bringing in a fee, whilst simply promoting to replace, providing the club with funds and a policy at reserve level that would see others fancy Everton better than say any other Northwest club.
(Bare in mind, Baxter - 17, Jutkiewicz 20, Gosling - 19, Rodwell - 19)
Today is as much about tomorrow and tomorrow is as much about today (or something trying to be as profound as that)

Thats the model mate been saying it for a while, another good team bubbling under the surface.

*Forget five years Lescott may be of by Monday.

Fellaini is younger than him anyway. Younger players today, more experienced pros tomorrow that pick up Nevilles work ethic and make it the spine of development.

right, and if the scholes thing comes true, he may be a bit washed up, but i'm sure they could learn from him as well. lets not forget stubbsy is in there too, i'm sure his guidance is invaluable.

A sound strategy on two fronts:

potential of cash from future sales as you say,

forward thinking for a possible introduction of a foreign players limit (Although Peterlin/ Mustafi have european passports the vast majority of our younger players are British).

A very sensible plan in the current economic climate.

Agreed what i found intresting were the young players taken on camp with the likes of Neville and Saha etc as well as Baxters comments about it great being amongst the lads again, seems hes been around the first team a lot.

Wallace, Coleman, Mustafi, Agard, and Akpan were also there.

Hearing great things about Bidwell, Hallem Hope and Barcley coming up behind these too.

Not to mention that young Engalnd youth international winger we signed earlier in the year, Femi Onuega (someone bump this when hes famous) i think his name was.

Well the plan is clearly to build from within. We have no choice really. Its hard to buy any players for 50p and a Mars Bar.

I dont think hes thinking of selling "the 1st teamers", the youngsters will play alongside the older players, every team needs a blend of youth and experience. For every Jack Rodwell you need a Phil Neville.

You will never win anything with kids or so somebody once wrongly claimed.

If it means we can save some money on squad fillers and every now and again find a gem its clearly the route to go down, Moyes is excellent at making players better.

Time will tell if any of them are any good, we can only hope that they all shine like Rodwell.

I agree to a point. However building for the future is that, building for the future. The problem is you get left behind that way. Most other clubs will invest in players now. Buying talent young or old, they move ahead of us and we move further down the league as a result. The result is less TV money and revenue. Which means by the time these players are ready, they dont want to stay with a mid table club they want to move on to a club that will challenge for cups. Ok we may get decent fees, but we have to use the fees to pay off the debts we amass because of the revenue we already lost.
Building for the future is great, but you also need to invest in players to keep you up there so these young players have a side they want to play in.

Goalkeeper Carlo Nash says there's some exciting talent coming through the ranks.

The experienced reserves keeper has seen first-hand the Blues production line and told fans in an evertonfc.com webchat: "The young lads from last season like Jose Baxter, James Wallace and the Merseyside derby hero (Dan Gosling) will play a part.

"We've got Hope Akpan and Shane Duffy here too. I played with them in the Reserves last year and hopefully they'll get a chance this year."

It does seem like Moyes is going very much with the young 'uns this year. Mustafa, the young left back from Leeds, the American midfielder and possibly Delph and Naughton. If Lescott does go then Jo and Richards may come the other way. That's a lot of young lads added to the squad.

Agree with Blueblood that we have to have a mix of incoming youngsters and established players. If we only try and buy for the future we might very well loose ground in the league and our youngsters will be more interested in joining another team. But if we manage to keep our European slot each season, or at least most of them.. this is a winning strategy.

The other drawback is the potential misses. We have had a lot of youngsters bought in that we have let go for free or a nominal fee since they didn't fulfill their potential. And there is no guarantee that Baxter, Garbutt, Mustafi or the others will mature into first team players.

So we need to go for both youngsters and established players.

I watched that World or Euro (not sure which) U17 tourney a while ago on Eurosport and that Mustafi lad was playing in CB and then was moved into a holding role in Midfield. I have to say he was fantastic that day scored with his head aswell.

Great prospect in my opinion has good height aswell.

Fair play to Moyesy for picking him up hopefully he lives up to the promise.
