Completely agree. The first two season's he pretty much tried to adapt some of the older squad members while he got on with spending big cash on crucial additions like McCarthy and Lukaku. Now the squad needs its long overdue overhaul.
I Don't think them two will sign a new contract so long term we will still rely on the old guard.

I feel we will get one more season from Romelu. I see him asking for a move to bigger and better things next summer. So back to square one again regarding a striker (even with the huge transfer fee for him). We have a few seasons of rebuilding to do alright.
Lukaku will remain here if there's no massive bid. I do wonder what price clause can be triggered in his contract, though.

At a club that isn't one of the big spenders you will be in a perpetual rebuild. We can't go out and buy players in their prime, like Chelsea with Fabregas and Costa, to fill the gaps. We have to buy younger, possibly lesser known players with the odd older head to help bed them in, like McCarthy, Besic and Barry. Then by the time the youngster has grown and matured into their role, another older head will need replacing whether they've passed their best or being sold to a 'bigger' club.

Exactly, and supplementing that process by bringing academy players in, like Garbutt, Galloway, Browning and eventually Ledson and Dowell.

Stones - been making mistakes (as has all the defence)
Macca - decent, I'll grant ya.
Ross - stunk the place out this season
Rom - a lot to live up to (don't mention that he wants to leave for a "big club")

They are good players, potentially very good, but potential needs to be fulfilled sooner rather than later.
When I criticize the "long term plan" it's because of signings like Alcaraz, Kone & E'to.
They're reasonably cost effective squad player stop gaps. You can add McGeady to that list. Nothing more. Martinez when he's spent a bit of money has done well and bought young. Lets hope it continues.

And though the Blues boss and Baines had discussed his potential to play there he admits to be being surprised when, eight months later, Martinez named him in Everton’s midfield at St James’ Park. “I’d never even trained there,” Baines said.

“Roberto told me on the day (that I would be playing there).

I bet thats cause of all those EL games we had to play, never had enough time to practice with Baines in midfield before the game on the 6 days a week we weren't playing in the EL.

Never mind Roberto, i reckon there's a Sunday league side somewhere who think putting left backs in midfield without any practice is a good idea, you can have a job at one of them when you get sacked.

Or maybe they were too busy practicing corners lol.
