Or what pretends to be one, is a shambles. Baines and Jagielka, for as much as we all love them, are past it, by a few years. Jags has not been the same since the last but one World Cup and we are watching one of our greatest left backs slowing down. It’s not their fault, we all get older, but it’s criminal that this has not been addressed as we used to do it, both Labone and Ratcliffe were done at 31/32 and replaced. Then we come to Keane, who just seems not up to it and looks more like a championship player with each passing game. We have a great goalkeeper with nothing in front of him. We have a few days left to buy replacements and while I tend not to do bed wetting at my age, I am really fearful of going into this new season. Tbf, we have a Baines replacement now, but CB is a goal scorers dream. The management know this and obviously are working at it, but every other team in the Premier League also knows this and we will get some serious beatings.

Sorry for the rambling, but I’ve never seen such a bad defence in over 50 years.....

Nothing wrong with buying Richarlison in my opinion, you have to take these types of players when you can. We seriously needed some attacking threat as well.

However, Baines looked like he was blowing after about 15 minutes today and was miles off his man all game.

I think you rightly identified that Silva/Brands will need more than 1 window to sort the shambles they inhereted out. Digne is a good start, but another CB is drastically needed, as is another competent CM.

I still maintain Keane will look far more like the player we thought we were getting as soon as Holgate, or a new CB with a bit of pace, is next to him.

He was a wonderful player, but we need a proper leader in midfield who can pick a pass. I would buy Ramsey from Arsenal.....
