is it a history book, rather than a fictional account?

Any scifi fans who haven't already should check out Alastair Reynolds. His books are unbelievably good, by far the best contemporary scifi author I've read. He's got a PhD in Astronomy and Physics so he knows his science behind it, brilliantly realistic. Revelation Space highly recommended.

He's my favourite historian, his books are usually excellent. It's an actual account of things.

Just started Bill Bryson's Shakespeare, which is lighter reading than you would expect and quite fun.

Yeah, I really liked that one. He never lets you down, Bryson.

Just started on the Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini - Its pretty intense, and paints a real eye-opening picture into the tribal culture of Afghanistan, and how the wheels came off that society in the 80's when the soviets came to town
